PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Adrian Atkins (ranked 1521 p4p, 3675 weight class) and Ryo Hazuki (ranked 203 p4p, 441 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Adrian Atkins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ryo Hazuki! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hazuki closes the distance and clinches up with Atkins, looking for a takedown. Hazuki pushes Atkins against the cage but Atkins circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Atkins throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Atkins throws out a loose jab but Hazuki uses good head movement to avoid it. Atkins bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Hazuki's head. Hazuki is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Hazuki misses with a leg kick letting Atkins counter with a right hand. Hazuki tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Atkins manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Hazuki dives in and grabs Atkins's left leg, looking for a takedown. Atkins pushes down on Hazuki's head and hops out. Atkins swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Atkins misses with a looping left. Hazuki ducks under a wild hook from Atkins. Hazuki takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Atkins lands with an overhand left. Good shot there by Atkins. Atkins uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Hazuki has time to react. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Hazuki misses with a head kick.
Hazuki shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Atkins pinned against the cage. Atkins gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Adrian Atkins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ryo Hazuki. Hazuki shoots in and drives through. Atkins sprawls well. Atkins has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The Rubber Guard Emporium in the buildup to the fight. Atkins lands the left hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Atkins cracks Hazuki with an open hand slap. Hazuki dives in for a single leg takedown but Atkins sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Atkins cracks Hazuki with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Atkins is really peppering his opponent's head with punches. The fight stays on the outside here - Hazuki looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Atkins tries to bum rush Hazuki with a series of wild strikes but Hazuki uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Atkins's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Hazuki connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Atkins scrambles back to his feet. Hazuki fails with an attempt to clinch.

and Atkins counters with a left to the body. Hazuki shoots for a double leg takedown but Atkins sprawls well. He's pushed Hazuki's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Hazuki gets tackled into the cage by Atkins. Atkins maintains the clinch. Atkins lands with a left to the head. Atkins lands with a short head shot on the inside. Atkins is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Atkins is defending well against a takedown attempt. Atkins makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Hazuki tries to pull guard but Atkins forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Hazuki is looking for a takedown. A short uppercut from Atkins. Hazuki takes a shot to the head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hazuki pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Atkins throws a hook but Hazuki avoids it easily. Hazuki gets the takedown into side control. Atkins manages to get back to half guard. Atkins gets full guard. Atkins pulls Hazuki in close to prevent any damage. Atkins has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Hazuki stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Atkins swivels though and keeps the full guard. Hazuki stands and throws Atkins's legs to the side, diving into side control. Hazuki working away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hazuki has hold of Atkins's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Atkins tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Hazuki cranks the arm and Atkins screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Atkins, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:27 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Ryo Hazuki!
