PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Magnus Goddard (ranked 1744 p4p, 717 weight class) and Anwar Rinda (ranked 186 p4p, 90 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Magnus Goddard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Anwar Rinda! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Daniel Bishop and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Goddard manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Rinda on his heels. He'll look to pass Rinda's guard now, I'm sure. Goddard won't allow Rinda to sweep him here. Goddard tries to free his leg and advance position but Rinda is retaining full guard. Goddard working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Rinda's head. Goddard is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Rinda is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Rinda not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Rinda holds on and takes a little breather. Goddard postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rinda is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Goddard is aware though and is defending well. Rinda is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Rinda wants to sweep here but Goddard controlling him for the moment. Goddard distracts Rinda with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
That's one minute gone in the round. Goddard working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Rinda is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Goddard defends well. Goddard thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Rinda has momentary wrist control but Goddard slips an elbow through the middle. Rinda working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Goddard doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Goddard manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Rinda utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Goddard got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rinda has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Goddard has managed to get both his arms back between Rinda's legs - danger averted. Goddard trying to control but Rinda is working from the bottom. Goddard missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rinda is looking for a triangle but Goddard pushes his legs off easily.
Goddard wants to control from the top but Rinda keeps moving. Goddard preventing the sweep. Goddard is working Rinda over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Goddard sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Rinda's guard. Rinda is in trouble now - Goddard has advanced to mount! Goddard wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Goddard working for a guillotine from mount but Rinda is in no mood to give up. Rinda is squirming around, avoiding Goddard's attempts to control the action.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Goddard lands with some strikes. Goddard looking to control but Rinda is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Goddard raining down shots from the mount! Goddard fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Goddard landing strikes from the mount. Goddard landing punches. Rinda has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Rinda is trying to escape the mount but Goddard keeps good control and instead manages to take Rinda's back.
Goddard is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Rinda has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. Rinda is trying to break free.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rinda wants to control his opponent's hands but Goddard gets his hands free. Goddard working for a choke but Rinda is defending well. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Goddard lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Rinda hold on?!
Rinda covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
Goddard misses with a punch to the head. Rinda can't escape the position.
Goddard working for a choke but Rinda is defending well. Rinda trying to control the hands but Goddard breaks the grip. Rinda rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Rinda moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Magnus Goddard dominated that round. That's time! Goddard's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Goddard fails with a takedown attempt. Rinda stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rinda wants it to stay on the feet. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Rinda! But no joy. Goddard fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Magnus Goddard. That's going to take a lot out of him. Goddard looking to score a takedown here. Rinda is defending well but Goddard drives through and ends up in Rinda's guard. Goddard throwing strikes but missing. Rinda pulls Goddard in close to his closed guard and prevents Goddard from doing any damage or advancing position. Rinda has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Goddard should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Rinda has tightened it up now! Goddard should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Anwar Rinda! An out of breath Anwar Rinda thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
