PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Gilmat Kirk (ranked 421 p4p, 653 weight class) and Dohn Jodson (ranked 50 p4p, 78 weight class). Kirk kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Lords of Iron. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gilmat Kirk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 27 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dohn Jodson! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jodson just misses with a punch to the body.
Kirk displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Jodson throws out the jab. Kirk looks for a takedown but Jodson sprawls well. Jodson closes the distance and clinches. Kirk turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Kirk misses with the ground and pound. You can see the frustration on Jodson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Kirk goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Jodson has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Kirk but great work by Jodson. Kirk tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Jodson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Jodson working away. Kirk has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
That's one minute gone in the round. Jodson decides to stand back up. Horrible takedown attempt by Kirk or perhaps it was just good defense by Jodson, which made it look bad. Kirk shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jodson's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kirk trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kirk drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Jodson dives on top into guard. Jodson wants to get up but he can't break Kirk's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Kirk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jodson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jodson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. That's two minutes gone in the round. Jodson avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Jodson got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kirk has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jodson has managed to get both his arms back between Kirk's legs - danger averted. Jodson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Kirk escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jodson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Kirk has his foot on Jodson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jodson works his way back into a safe position though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kirk looking for a guillotine here but Jodson defends easily.
Kirk is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Jodson is aware though and is defending well. Kirk is looking for a triangle but Jodson pushes his legs off easily.
Kirk controlling Jodson's posture. Jodson engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Jodson wants to get up but he can't break Kirk's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Jodson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Kirk is looking for a triangle but Jodson pushes his legs off easily.
Kirk has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jodson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Jodson is looking to stand up but Kirk won't let him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kirk trying to keep a closed guard but Jodson is proving a slippery customer.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Jodson throws a lazy uppercut
and Kirk counters with an outside leg kick.
Kirk gets tackled into the cage by Jodson. Jodson maintains the clinch. Kirk taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Dohn Jodson will probably get the nod. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Kirk moves out of range of the strikes. Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Jodson, as that shot connected.
Dohn Jodson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kirk shoots in and drives through. Jodson sprawls well. Jodson throws a looping overhand right but Kirk ducks down to avoid it. Jodson throws an off balance right hand
and Kirk makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick. Jodson scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Kirk looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Kirk checks a leg kick. Kirk dives in for a single leg takedown but Jodson sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Jodson scores with an uppercut up the middle. Kirk looking to throw knees to the head but Jodson is blocking nicely.
Kirk prevents a body shot from Jodson. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jodson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Jodson tries to bum rush Kirk with a series of wild strikes but Kirk uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kirk tries to clinch up but Jodson circles away and keeps his distance. Jodson throws a leg kick and Kirk counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Kirk. Kirk throwing strikes but missing. Kirk makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Kirk postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Kirk trying to control but Jodson is working from the bottom. Kirk working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Jodson's head. Kirk trying to control but Jodson is working from the bottom. Kirk tries to free his leg and advance position but Jodson is retaining full guard. Jodson preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kirk throws an elbow that misses. Jodson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kirk's guard. Nice move by Jodson!

Kirk is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Kirk is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Gilmat Kirk overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Kirk trying to control the position.
Jodson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Jodson stands up from guard. Let's bang! Jodson misses with a looping left. Kirk attempts a counter takedown but Jodson avoids it well and moves away. Jodson keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Kirk walks into a left hand. Kirk slips under a jab. Kirk feinted with a counter takedown. Gilmat Kirk is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Jodson throws a right hand that Kirk ducks under and follows up with a left that Kirk also avoids with ease. Kirk appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kirk shoots for a double leg takedown but Jodson sprawls well. He's pushed Kirk's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gilmat Kirk. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kirk scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Jodson avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Kirk. Jodson is defending against the submission attempts here by Kirk.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Kirk looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kirk is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Jodson defends it well. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Dohn Jodson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round! Jodson throws a nice outside leg kick. Kirk walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kirk is defended easily by Jodson. Jodson throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Kirk counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. A decent looking cross lands there for Jodson. Jodson with a nice cross. Jodson has been the more effective fighter overall so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kirk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Jodson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Jodson throws a body punch but Kirk moves out of range. Jodson stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Jab from Jodson.
Kirk is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Jodson moves into range and throws a big uppercut. OH! Kirk goes down! Can Jodson finish him!? Oh Kirk is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
That's one minute gone in the round. Kirk looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Jodson is defending well. Kirk quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Jodson has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Kirk celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:24 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gilmat Kirk! A relieved looking Gilmat Kirk thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
