PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Akira Maeda (ranked 1728 p4p, 1498 weight class) and Vinny Corcoran (ranked 227 p4p, 199 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Akira Maeda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Vinny Corcoran!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, John Roberts and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Corcoran is looking to land body kicks.
Maeda throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Corcoran counters with a solid body kick.
Maeda will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

and Corcoran lands a stunning uppercut that sends Maeda to the mat!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Corcoran decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

We've been hearing reports that Maeda has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Maeda holds on and takes a little breather.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Corcoran steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Maeda.
Corcoran has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Corcoran there as he acknowledges the shot.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Maeda works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Corcoran ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Akira Maeda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maeda on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Maeda feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Maeda won't allow Corcoran to get back to his feet.

Maeda clobbers Corcoran with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

As Maeda backs off Corcoran throws a huge counter combo but Maeda manages to avoid it all.
Maeda lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
A lazy left from Maeda finds it's target.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maeda uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Corcoran has time to react.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Maeda jabs Corcoran right on the nose. Corcoran blinks but takes it well.
Maeda rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Corcoran counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Corcoran tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
You get the feeling that Corcoran really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Maeda postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Corcoran looks a forlorn figure.
Maeda unloads with some shots from mount but Corcoran bucks and avoids them well.

Maeda is landing with some decent strikes but Corcoran is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Maeda pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Corcoran really wants to buck Maeda off and get back to his feet.
BOOM! Maeda connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Corcoran is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Corcoran takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Maeda lands a big shot there that rocks Corcoran but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Maeda cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Maeda has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Maeda won't let Corcoran get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Akira Maeda overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Poor strikes thrown by Maeda there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
