PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Don Cortez (ranked 1976 p4p, 1441 weight class) and Nick Rodriquez (ranked 262 p4p, 201 weight class). Nick Rodriquez told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Cortez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Nick Rodriquez!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cortez throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rodriquez.

Rodriquez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Cortez has escaped the position, nice work there.
Rodriquez postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Rodriquez throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Rodriquez working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cortez is looking for a sweep.
Rodriquez scores with punches from side control.
Rodriquez scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Cortez to see if he's OK.

Rodriquez is looking to take a break and control but Cortez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Cortez is trying to get back to half guard.
Rodriquez connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Cortez some visible discomfort.
Rodriquez landing a few strikes.
Rodriquez tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Cortez sneaks back into half guard.
My spies in Doc Dannis Death Squad inform me that Rodriquez has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Rodriquez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
The fighters are battling for position here. Cortez manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Cortez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Rodriquez's guard.

Cortez is really struggling to control Rodriquez but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rodriquez wants to sweep here but Cortez controlling him for the moment.
Rodriquez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cortez manages to get himself to full guard.

Rodriquez content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rodriquez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Rodriquez trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Rodriquez wants to control from the top but Cortez keeps moving.

Rodriquez scoring with some ground and pound.
Rodriquez lands a couple of digs.
Rodriquez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cortez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rodriquez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Cortez controls Rodriquez momentarily but Rodriquez frees himself.
Rodriquez is stalling in the full guard.
Rodriquez wants to control from the top but Cortez keeps moving.
Cortez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Rodriquez's guard.

Cortez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Rodriquez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cortez defends well.

Cortez has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Rodriquez to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Cortez is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Rodriquez pulls down on the head and he's put Cortez to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Nick Rodriquez!
