CWC 287 - Las Vegas PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 18 wins and 14 losses; Joshua Brown! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 19 wins and 15 losses; Bjj Steel! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Chris Downing.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Steel fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Steel dives in for a single leg takedown but Brown sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Brown takes the fight into the clinch. Steel has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Brown after a bit of a struggle. Joshua Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bjj Steel. Steel has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Brown is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Steel has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Brown after a bit of a struggle. Brown gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Steel.

Brown being controlled here, momentarily. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Brown holds on and takes a little breather. We've been hearing good reports from Brown's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steel passes Brown's left leg - he's now in half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brown tries to roll over but Steel keeps him under control. Brown trying to control here.

Brown preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head. Brown has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Steel is working away from the top position though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brown tries to roll over but Steel keeps him under control. Brown trying to control from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Brown is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Steel takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. It looks like Steel might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Brown is working to get back to half guard.

That's five minutes gone in the round. Steel controlling his opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Steel prevents Brown from getting the reversal. Steel controlling from mount. Brown really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Steel takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Steel trying to control but Brown is having none of it.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Brown is desperately trying to improve his position but Steel has a good base and remains in mount. Steel controlling the position easily from mount. Brown really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Steel controlling his opponent. Steel goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Brown turns into him and now he's in Steel's guard.

That's eight minutes gone in the round. Brown stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Steel swivels though and keeps the full guard. Brown advances to half guard. Brown prevents Steel from improving his position. Steel trying to control here.
Brown will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Steel keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Brown controlling the pace. Brown is pressing down on Steel's thigh, looking to free his foot. Steel is holding on for now.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Steel is looking for a sweep. Brown is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Steel trying to control from the bottom.
Brown prevents Steel from improving his position. Steel wants to control but Brown is keeping busy and won't allow it. Brown is taking a breather. Steel says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Steel moves into full guard.
Brown wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving. Steel pulls Brown in to control the position. Brown sitting in guard, not really doing much.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Brown is fighting to break Steel's control of his arms but Steel is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Brown trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Brown wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving. Steel has control of Brown's left arm, preventing Brown from doing any damage. Brown trying to control the position from guard on top but Steel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Steel is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Brown controlling from the top position. Brown pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Steel is keeping the position for now. Steel is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Steel looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Brown puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Steel is pressing down on Brown's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Brown wants to pass the guard but Steel is keeping the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Steel wins on points by 3 to 2. An out of breath Bjj Steel thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career. |
