This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 41 wins and 24 losses; Maxim Bok! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 13 wins and 9 losses; Eddie Gelfen! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Mauricio Rocha and Paulo Santos.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Gelfen shoots in and gets a takedown into Bok's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Bok (0) vs (2) Gelfen Gelfen won't allow Bok to sweep him here. Bok pulls Gelfen in to control the position. Bok wants to sweep but no luck. Bok seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Gelfen has gone for a leg lock! Bok slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gelfen's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Bok (2) vs (2) Gelfen Bok pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gelfen is keeping the position for now. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gelfen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Bok defends it easily. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gelfen is on top in guard.

Gelfen seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bok does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Bok tries to roll over but Gelfen keeps him under control. Bok gets full guard.

Gelfen slips nicely into half guard. Bok tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Gelfen has advanced to mount. Uh oh. That's five minutes gone in the round. Bok might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Gelfen wants to take Bok's back but he can't do it this time. Gelfen controlling from mount. Bok sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Bok tries to roll over but Gelfen keeps him under control. Gelfen wants to take a breather but Bok is having none of it.

Gelfen wants to pass the guard but Bok is defending well. Gelfen is keen to just control but Bok is a slippery customer. That's seven minutes gone in the round. Gelfen is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Bok is surviving well by controlling Gelfen's body position as best he can. Bok is looking to improve his position but Gelfen isn't that keen on the idea. Gelfen controlling his opponent. Bok is trying desperately to improve position. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Gelfen wants to control the pace but Bok is squirming around nicely.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Gelfen might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Bok haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Bok wants to hold on but Gelfen pushes him away. Gelfen forces the positional change into back control. Score +3 for taking back: Bok (2) vs (15) Gelfen Bok trying to control but not successfully. Gelfen goes for a risky armbar from back mount and it's not paid off. Bok escapes and is now in half guard on top. Score +3 for taking back: Bok (10) vs (15) Gelfen Gelfen staying busy and making it hard for Bok to control. Gelfen defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Bok's arms. A lull in the action here.
Bok is looking for the choke from the back position but Gelfen is controlling his hands well.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Gelfen's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Bok has good solid back control here. Gelfen tries to escape but Bok has the hooks in and won't let him break free. Bok has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Gelfen's body.
Bok is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Bok trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Gelfen manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! And that's the end of the fight! Gelfen wins on points by 17 to 14. In his post fight interview, Eddie Gelfen started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception. |
