PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Abigg Chungus (ranked 3533 p4p, 2592 weight class) and Calogero Verdi (ranked 421 p4p, 315 weight class). Verdi has chosen CHAMPION as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Abigg Chungus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Calogero Verdi!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, William Peck and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chungus misses with a two punch combination.
Chungus scores with a jab.
Chungus throws a series of punches but Verdi avoids them all with ease.

A jab-cross combination lands for Chungus and sends Verdi crashing to the mat! Chungus follows him down to the mat - Verdi regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!

Verdi is rocked!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Verdi is still in real trouble! Can Chungus finish him?
Verdi seems to have recovered his senses.

Chungus is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Verdi has managed to free his arm - good work.
Chungus passes to side control.

Verdi wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Verdi trying desperately to get to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Chungus goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Verdi turns into him and now he's in Chungus's guard.
Verdi must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Chungus pulls Verdi in to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Verdi stopping the sweep attempt from Chungus.
Chungus is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Verdi is looking to escape.
Chungus keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Chungus is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Verdi doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Chungus.

Chungus is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Verdi looks like he's trying to stand up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Chungus in particular looking to stall.
Chungus has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Chungus's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Chungus avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Chungus closes the distance and pushes Verdi back into the cage.
Verdi tries to break free but Chungus pushes him back against the cage.
Chungus is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Verdi can do to turn this around?

Chungus pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Chungus moves out of range of the strikes.

Chungus forces Verdi back against the cage and clinches.

Chungus breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Verdi misses with a right hand
and Verdi takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Chungus has Verdi pressed against the cage, preventing Verdi from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A head punch on the inside from Chungus fails to land.
Verdi is trying to push Chungus away but Chungus has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Verdi breaks the clinch.
Verdi walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Chungus displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Verdi throws out the jab.
Chungus lands with a straight right. Verdi didn't see that one coming.
Abigg Chungus is winning the standup battle so far.
Verdi misses with a looping left.
Chungus avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Verdi throws out a loose jab but Chungus uses good head movement to avoid it.
Verdi connects with a nice looking jab.
Verdi misses with a looping right.
Chungus throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Chungus closes the distance and clinches.
Chungus lands with a light punch inside.

Chungus's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Chungus lands a jab to Verdi's midsection.

Chungus shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Verdi manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Chungus is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Verdi is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Chungus is controlling him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Chungus passes Verdi's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Chungus looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Verdi won't allow Chungus to pass to mount.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Chungus cracks Verdi with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
A jab from Chungus finds it's way through Verdi's defenses.
Verdi leaves Chungus with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Calogero Verdi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Verdi misses with a right hand
and Chungus counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Verdi throws an off balance right hand

and Chungus counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Verdi wants to break free but Chungus has control.

Chungus escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Verdi swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Chungus moves out of range of the strikes.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Abigg Chungus dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Chungus lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Verdi at a distance.
Chungus on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Verdi is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Chungus.
Chungus connects with a body shot.
Verdi might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Verdi looks to throw the jab but Chungus is out of range.
We've been told by Chungus's head coaches at Tran MMA Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Chungus closes the distance and pushes Verdi back into the cage.
Chungus dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A nice left hand lands by Chungus.
Chungus's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Verdi moves forwards but Chungus connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Verdi throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Chungus sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Chungus's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Chungus duly obliges.
Verdi throws a hook to the side of Chungus's head but Chungus sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Verdi tries a head kick but it misses.
Verdi misses with a looping left.
Abigg Chungus is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Chungus ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Chungus appears to be looking for a big counter.
Verdi throws out a loose jab but Chungus uses good head movement to avoid it.
Verdi looks to throw the jab but Chungus is out of range.

Verdi lands with a straight right. Chungus didn't see that one coming.
Chungus lands with an overhand left.
Chungus cracks Verdi with a big right hand that sees him stumbling back against the cage! Verdi falls to his knees and Chungus doesn't need a second invitatation - he rushes in and fires off several unanswered shots that force the referee to stop the fight! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Abigg Chungus!
