PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Inaki Gurgel (ranked 4658 p4p, 4465 weight class) and Jack Dye (ranked 541 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Inaki Gurgel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jack Dye!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Peter Branson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Dye tries to keep at a distance but Gurgel has taken the fight into the clinch.
Gurgel keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Dye's efforts to push away.
Dye misses with a punch to the body.
Gurgel tries to pull guard but Dye holds him up against the cage and eventually Gurgel drops back down to his feet.
Dye lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Gurgel backwards.
Dye swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Dye makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Gurgel blocking some punches.
A right handed body shot lands from Dye.
Gurgel wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Dye misses with some punches.

Gurgel pulls guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dye wants to get up but he can't break Gurgel's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Dye trying to control but Gurgel is working from the bottom.
Dye stops Gurgel from standing up.
Dye really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gurgel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gurgel doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Gurgel wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Dye preventing the sweep.
Gurgel seems keen to control Dye's posture.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Dye jabs Gurgel right on the nose. Gurgel blinks but takes it well.
Dye stuffs the takedown.

Gurgel fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Dye, pushing him back against the cage.

Dye is trying to break the clinch but Gurgel is controlling him.

Dye misses with a hook from the clinch.
Gurgel fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Gurgel tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Dye smiles and moves away.

Gurgel shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Gurgel showed some decent athleticism there.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Still in half guard, Gurgel seems content to control.

Gurgel decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Gurgel misses with a takedown attempt - Dye sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
A little jabbing left from Dye on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
A head kick misses from Gurgel.
The crowd cheers as Dye lands an impressive looking overhand right. Gurgel doesn't seem phased though.

Gurgel scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Gurgel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Dye is just riding it out for now. Gurgel eventually gives up the hold.

Dye has one foot on Gurgel's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dye circles away from the clinch attempt
and Dye counters with a stiff right hand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Gurgel shoots in and drives through. Dye sprawls well.
Gurgel with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dye counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Gurgel takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Gurgel tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Dye paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Dye has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

and Dye counters with a nice uppercut.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from Dye! But no joy.

Gurgel throws an overhand right that lands on Dye's shoulder, as Dye tries to avoid the shot.
Gurgel fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Gurgel bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Dye tries to escape but Gurgel is in control.

Gurgel stands up.
Jack Dye seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Gurgel throws a right and a left that Dye avoids nicely.
Gurgel looks for a takedown but Dye sprawls well.
It seemed like Dye was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gurgel.
Dye's corner calls for a 1-2. Dye obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Gurgel feints and as Dye raises his hands in defense, Gurgel changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Gurgel doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Dye counters with a straight right hand.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gurgel or perhaps it was just good defense by Dye, which made it look bad.
Dye throws out a counter right but Gurgel avoids it with no problem.

and Dye counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Dye fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Gurgel on the side of the head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Dye showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Gurgel is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Dye with him. Dye is trying to defend but Gurgel has an arm under the chin now! Dye grimaces and is forced to tap out!
