PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Carter Wright (ranked 302 p4p, 358 weight class) and Rene Lafayette (ranked 42 p4p, 54 weight class). Lafayette comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Erasure - Always kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Carter Wright!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rene Lafayette!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wright throws a hook to the side of Lafayette's head but Lafayette sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Lafayette throws out a counter right but Wright avoids it with no problem.
Wright throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Good standup being displayed there by Wright as he connects with a hook.

Lafayette throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wright was covering up waiting for the punch and Lafayette finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Wright is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Wright swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Wright misses with a punch on the inside.
We've been informed that Lafayette has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.

Lafayette manages to break the clinch.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wright moves away from the strike by Lafayette.

Lafayette moves into range and clinches up with Wright.

Lafayette is trying to trip Wright. He has hold of a leg but Wright is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Lafayette persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Wright is controlling the pace.
Lafayette is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Wright jumps into side control!

Wright has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Lafayette is looking to regain half guard here but Wright keeps moving and retains side control.
Lafayette is trying to escape the position but Wright is controlling the position.
Lafayette is trying to control Wright's posture but Wright avoids it.
Lafayette is looking for a sweep.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
You can see the frustration on Lafayette's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
A lull in the action here as Wright stalls from top position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
We've been told by Wright's head coaches at Hard And Sweaty Men that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lafayette bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Wright swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Lafayette looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Lafayette moves out of range of the body kick.
And Lafayette tries to counter it with a takedown but Wright pushes his down on his head and steps out.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Lafayette lands a leg kick that knocks Wright off balance momentarily.
Wright throws an overhand right that lands on Lafayette's shoulder, as Lafayette tries to avoid the shot.
Lafayette is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Wright with a body shot.

Wright thinks about countering with a head kick.
Lafayette throws a low kick but Wright moves out of range easily.
Lafayette throws a hook to the side of Wright's head but Wright sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Wright uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Lafayette.
A little feinted left hand from Wright on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Rene Lafayette seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lafayette misses with a lunging right hand
and Wright cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
The fighters circle momentarily. Lafayette darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Lafayette throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A chopping leg kick lands by Lafayette.

Lafayette darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Wright pushes Lafayette off and gets back to his feet.
Lafayette throws a body shot but no joy.
Wright fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Lafayette manages to avoid it.
Lafayette throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
A swing and a miss from Lafayette.
Wright lands the left hand.
Lafayette tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Wright manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Wright went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Carter Wright is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Lafayette checks a leg kick.
Lafayette doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

A clash of legs there as Lafayette blocks the low kick.
Wright walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Lafayette dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Wright. That did some damage!

and Lafayette counters with a thumping low kick.

Lafayette throws a poor cross that misses
and Wright counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Lafayette's corner calls for a 1-2. Lafayette obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lafayette throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Wright makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Nice jab there from Wright.
Lafayette looks to land a right hand but Wright moved out of range.
Wright steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Lafayette.
The crowd cheers as Wright lands an impressive looking overhand right. Lafayette doesn't seem phased though.

and Wright counters with a nice right hand that sends Lafayette toppling to the canvas! Lafayette scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Wright finish him?!

and Wright counters with a huge overhand right that connects right on the temple, sending him crumpling, face first to the floor! This one is all over! What a knockout!

An out of breath Carter Wright thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
