PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jewel Diaz (ranked 806 p4p, 1227 weight class) and Matthew Fritz (ranked 92 p4p, 138 weight class). Diaz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Andre Nickatina, Drought Season. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jewel Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Fritz!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, James Glass and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz misses with a right hand
and Fritz counters with a three punch combo that has Diaz backing up. Diaz nods at Fritz to acknowledge the strikes.
Diaz bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Diaz is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Fritz's half guard.
Fritz is trying to control but can't.

Fritz is not content to let Diaz control the position.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Diaz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Diaz throws a big elbow that misses.
Fritz is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Fritz trying to keep a closed guard but Diaz is proving a slippery customer.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Diaz throws a strike but Fritz rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Fritz told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Fritz not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Diaz lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Fritz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Fritz wants it to stay on the feet.

Diaz tightens his grip and picks Fritz up, before dumping him to the ground. Fritz manages to land in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Diaz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Let's hope that Fritz has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Fritz has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Diaz is on him like a limpet, forcing Fritz back against the cage.

Diaz drops down looking for an ankle pick but Fritz pulls his leg out and moves away.
Diaz throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Fritz's waist but Fritz gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Diaz off to one side.
Fritz throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Diaz closes the distance and clinches up with Fritz, looking for a takedown. Diaz pushes Fritz against the cage but Fritz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Diaz crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Fritz - the referee stops the clock and Diaz gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Fritz. Diaz manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Fritz lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Fritz lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Diaz misses with a straight left.
Fritz throws a front kick aimed at Diaz's knee but Diaz avoids it well.
Diaz appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
Diaz misses with a takedown attempt - Fritz sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Diaz closes the distance and clinches up with Fritz, looking for a takedown. Diaz pushes Fritz against the cage but Fritz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
A nice side step and Fritz releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

The fighters circling - Fritz throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Fritz throws a hook but Diaz blocks it.
Diaz fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Fritz.

Diaz half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Matthew Fritz seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Diaz was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Diaz darts in looking for a takedown but Fritz gets double underhooks and turns Diaz into the cage.

Diaz lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Fritz backwards.
I was talking to Diaz's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Diaz wants a takedown.
Diaz prevents a body shot from Fritz.
Diaz blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Fritz misses with the head strike.
Fritz tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Fritz is pressed up against the cage. Diaz has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Fritz down to the mat. Fritz avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Matthew Fritz spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
