PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Calaway (ranked 4348 p4p, 5870 weight class) and Boris Johnson (ranked 518 p4p, 625 weight class). Calaway comes to the cage accompanied by Undertaker. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mark Calaway!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Boris Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Michael Johnstone and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Calaway throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Johnson shoots in looking for a takedown. Calaway tries to sprawl out of it but Johnson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Calaway manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Johnson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Johnson fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Johnson tries to pull guard but Calaway forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Mark Calaway has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Boris Johnson.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Calaway pulls guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson is fighting to break Calaway's control of his arms but Calaway is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Johnson throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Johnson wants to control from the top but Calaway keeps moving.
Calaway looking to hit a scissor sweep but Johnson is one step ahead there.

Calaway is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Johnson postures up.
Johnson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Johnson trying to control but Calaway is working from the bottom.
Calaway is trying to control the position but Johnson postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Calaway has a closed guard, preventing Johnson from standing up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Calaway shoots in but no luck this time.

Johnson clinches with his opponent.
Calaway goes for a takedown in the clinch but Johnson prevents it.
Johnson can't get the takedown.
Johnson is trying to pull guard but Calaway turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Calaway ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Calaway no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Johnson postures up.

Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Calaway is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Johnson throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Johnson drops back, looking for a kneebar! Calaway looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Calaway looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Calaway!

Calaway wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
Johnson tries to improve position but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Calaway cracks Johnson with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Calaway will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Johnson is looking to reverse the position.
Johnson should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Johnson wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Calaway decides to stand back up.
Calaway shoots and misses
and Johnson counters with a left to the body.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Calaway sprawls well. Calaway wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Johnson gets slowly back to his feet.
Calaway appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Calaway keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Johnson misses with a takedown attempt - Calaway sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Calaway changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Johnson counters with a one-two to the body.
Johnson avoids a kick to the body.

Johnson is looking for a triangle but Calaway pushes his legs off easily.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Johnson has eaten all the pies!
Calaway sitting in guard here, content to control.
Calaway trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Johnson is striking off his back. Calaway thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Calaway is working for a kimura but Johnson is defending it quite comfortably.
Calaway is keen to just control but Johnson is a slippery customer.

Calaway is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Johnson defends it well.
Johnson wants to get back to full guard but Calaway has passed into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Calaway wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
Johnson tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Calaway in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Calaway stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Calaway displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Johnson.

Calaway scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Calaway wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
Johnson is looking to regain half guard here but Calaway keeps moving and retains side control.
Johnson looks to move to half guard but instead Calaway has passed into mount! Damn!
Calaway trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Johnson keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Calaway cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Calaway wants to clinch up but Johnson keeps it at a distance.
Johnson is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Calaway with a body shot.

It looks like Boris Johnson has been cut.
Johnson digs a good body shot into Calaway's ribs.
Calaway dives in for a single leg takedown but Johnson sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Calaway can't get the takedown.
Calaway is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Johnson gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Calaway. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Calaway jumps guard.
Johnson throwing strikes but missing.
Johnson looking to sit in guard and control but Calaway gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Mark Calaway overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Calaway has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Johnson is proving hard to escape from.

Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Calaway gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Johnson wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Calaway is now in half guard.
Calaway prevents Johnson from improving his position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Calaway passes to full mount!
Calaway can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Johnson is looking to escape.
Johnson is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Calaway controlling his opponent.
Johnson working to try and regain half guard.

Calaway throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Calaway can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Johnson is looking to escape.
Calaway is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Johnson can do to turn this around?
Calaway lands a big elbow.

That has opened up Boris Johnson's cut even more.
Johnson tries to hold on but Calaway pushes him away.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Calaway working the ground and pound effectively.
Calaway tries to control but Johnson wriggling away.
Calaway prevents Johnson from getting the reversal.
Calaway pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Calaway can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Johnson is looking to escape.

Mark Calaway showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Calaway, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
