Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Khamzat Sonnen (ranked 6169 p4p, 4290 weight class) and James Jones (ranked 631 p4p, 509 weight class). Khamzat Sonnen could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to James Jones's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Khamzat Sonnen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Jones! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Chris Edwards and Andrew Berry.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sonnen fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Jones stuffs the takedown. Jones swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Sonnen shoots in looking for a takedown but Jones manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sonnen's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Khamzat Sonnen. That's going to take a lot out of him. Jones tries to bum rush Sonnen with a series of wild strikes but Sonnen uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Jones gets a clinch. Sonnen is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Jones gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Sonnen jumps guard and drags Jones to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Sonnen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Jones defends it easily. Sonnen wants to sweep but no luck. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jones wants to pass the guard but Sonnen is keeping the position. Sonnen avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Jones throwing strikes from guard but Sonnen blocks nicely. Jones trying to control but Sonnen is working from the bottom. Sonnen pulls Jones in close to prevent any damage. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Sonnen working for a triangle but Jones defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Jones pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sonnen is keeping the position for now. Jones trying to control but Sonnen is working from the bottom. Sonnen is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Jones displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sonnen. Sonnen shoots and misses and Jones counters with a lovely straight right hand! No luck for Sonnen with that takedown attempt. Jones looks like he wants to counter punch here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sonnen dodges the punch combination from Jones.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky. Jones lands a right hook to the body.
Sonnen doesn't manage to clinch there - Jones circles away.
Jones bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Sonnen's head. Sonnen looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Sonnen throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. We've been hearing good reports from Sonnen's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Sonnen is looking for a kimura but Jones is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sonnen to get the leverage. Sonnen scoring with strikes to the body and head. Sonnen is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Jones trying to hold on to Sonnen's head to control him but Sonnen postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sonnen winds up and cracks Jones with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Jones pushes Sonnen off looking to stand but Sonnen dives back in and keeps control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sonnen connects with a nice short shot to Jones's temple. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Jones has hold of Sonnen's hands but Sonnen slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Jones is rocked! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sonnen scores with a big shot! Jones's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Jones! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Khamzat Sonnen! Khamzat Sonnen seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
