PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matija Maestro (ranked 500 p4p, 799 weight class) and Bob Probert (ranked 67 p4p, 110 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Maestro might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Shortwire - Reconfig. Probert is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by DNA. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 8 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matija Maestro! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bob Probert! The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Ian Loll and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Probert looks to land a right hand but Maestro moved out of range. Maestro showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Probert.
Probert moves in looking to clinch but Maestro pushes him off. Maestro moves out of range of the strikes. Probert lands with a nice body punch. Probert takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Maestro lands the left hand. Maestro shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Probert but Probert pushes him off and we're back to square one. Probert looks like he wants to counter punch here. Maestro jabs Probert right on the nose. Probert blinks but takes it well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Maestro gets a double leg takedown into Probert's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Probert is trying to keep Maestro in close.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Maestro pushing down on Probert's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Probert wants to control but Maestro is keeping busy and won't allow it. Probert is looking to improve his position.
Probert looking for submissions off his back. Probert is defending against the submission attempts here by Maestro.
Probert felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Maestro wants to control but Probert is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Maestro moves nicely into side control. Maestro thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Maestro working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Probert wants to control but Maestro postures up. That's three minutes gone in the round. Probert is looking for a sweep. Probert trying to remain calm as Maestro controls from the top position. Probert struggling a bit here. What's Probert going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle. Probert tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Maestro wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Probert struggling a bit here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Maestro trying to control the position but Probert is working away. Probert tries to bench press Maestro off him but Maestro keeps the position. Probert is not content to let Maestro control the position. Maestro advances nicely into full mount. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Probert is wriggling around trying to escape.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Matija Maestro dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Probert staying out of range there. Probert tests Maestro's chin there with a solid looking shot. Maestro connects with a body shot that sends Probert's belly button to the back. Probert throws a solid leg kick but Maestro takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Probert. Probert cracks Maestro with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Probert misses the shot to the body. A nice leg kick from Probert, right into the meat of the thigh.
Maestro goes for a double leg but Probert avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Probert continues to drive forward. Maestro is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Probert can do to turn this around? Maestro lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage. Maestro softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Maestro misses with a hook to the ribs.
Probert misses with a hook from the clinch. Maestro lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Probert lands a nice shot to the body. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Probert misses with a short punch on the inside. Probert prevents a body shot from Maestro. Maestro turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Maestro manages to end up in side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maestro is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Probert has escaped the position, nice work there. Maestro advances nicely into full mount. Maestro can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Probert is looking to escape. Maestro wants to take Probert's back here but Probert is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Probert wants to hold on but Maestro pushes him away. Probert tries to improve his position but Maestro has taken his back! Maestro has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Probert tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Maestro pushes Probert away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Matija Maestro! Matija Maestro retains his lightweight title! Our winner, Matija Maestro, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
