PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Trepanier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leeland Chapman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matt Trepanier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Leeland Chapman!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chapman changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Trepanier looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Trepanier is trying to get back to half guard.
Trepanier sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Trepanier is staying active underneath Chapman, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Chapman trying to mount his opponent but Trepanier defends it.
Trepanier is trying to maintain the position but Chapman is very close to passing his half guard.
Trepanier is not content to let Chapman control the position.
Trepanier is trying to control but can't.
Trepanier tries to get to full guard but Chapman has control of the leg.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Trepanier throws a series of punches but Chapman avoids them all with ease.

Trepanier misses with a takedown attempt
and Chapman counters with a left to the body.
Chapman stalks Trepanier and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Trepanier's face. Trepanier staggers backwards, shaken.

Trepanier feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Trepanier is breathing heavily.
Chapman throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Chapman is pulling down on Trepanier's head. It's preventing any offense from Trepanier, at least for the moment.
Chapman is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Trepanier is controlling him.

Chapman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Trepanier doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Trepanier manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Chapman is trying to control the position but Trepanier postures up.

Chapman tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Trepanier landing with the ground and pound.
Trepanier with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Chapman wants to sweep but no luck.
Chapman avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Chapman is on top in guard.
Trepanier tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Chapman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Trepanier works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Trepanier manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Trepanier wants to control the pace but Chapman is squirming around nicely.

Chapman wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Trepanier.
Chapman is desperately trying to improve his position but Trepanier has a good base and remains in mount.
Chapman wants to hold on but Trepanier pushes him away.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Trepanier controlling his opponent.
Chapman can't escape the position.
Chapman swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Chapman throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Chapman sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Trepanier wants to pass the guard but Chapman is defending well.
Trepanier blocks the strikes from Chapman.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leeland Chapman dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Chapman moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Chapman fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Trepanier sprawls well initially but Chapman persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Trepanier is looking to improve his position.
Chapman is keen to just control but Trepanier is a slippery customer.
Chapman prevents Trepanier from improving his position.

Chapman throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Trepanier feints and as Chapman raises his hands in defense, Trepanier changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Trepanier tries to free his leg and advance position but Chapman is retaining full guard.

Chapman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Trepanier landing with the ground and pound.
Trepanier stops Chapman from standing up.

Trepanier trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Chapman has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Chapman lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Trepanier!
Chapman has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Trepanier's face.
Trepanier really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Chapman can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Trepanier is looking to escape.
Chapman working away from the top, dropping strikes.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chapman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
A nice elbow there by Chapman.

Chapman is working for a guillotine from mount but Trepanier frees his head quite easily.
Trepanier is trying desperately to improve position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Chapman avoids the attempt from Trepanier to control.
Chapman trying to control but he's not successful this time.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Trepanier is squirming around, avoiding Chapman's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leeland Chapman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

so Chapman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Chapman stays in close to Trepanier's body and controls the position.
Chapman won't allow Trepanier to sweep him here.
Chapman pushes down on Trepanier's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Trepanier tries to get to full guard but Chapman has control of the leg.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Chapman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Trepanier does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Trepanier is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Chapman is trying to control the action in half guard but Trepanier is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Chapman is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Trepanier keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Chapman shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Trepanier's guard.

Chapman decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Chapman lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Chapman not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Trepanier manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Chapman manages to get himself to full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Leeland Chapman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Chapman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
