Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Newton closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mendez quickly recovers to half guard.
Newton wants to take a breather but Mendez is having none of it.
Mendez wants to improve his position but Newton is controlling well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Newton in particular looking to stall.
Mendez is staying active underneath Newton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mendez tries to get to full guard but Newton has control of the leg.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Newton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mendez keeps working.
Newton is pressing down on Mendez's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mendez is holding on for now.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Newton unloads with some shots from mount but Mendez bucks and avoids them well.
Newton lands a couple of good shots and Mendez has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
Newton tries to keep control of the position but Mendez is staying busy.
Newton misses with an elbow to the head.
Mendez is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Newton has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Newton is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Mendez. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Mendez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Newton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

We've been hearing good reports from Newton's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Newton is looking for the choke from the back position but Mendez is controlling his hands well.
Newton lands strikes to the head.
Mendez takes a big shot to the side of the head.
Mendez trying to control but not successfully.
Newton is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Newton gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Newton gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Newton apologises and we restart here on the feet.

Newton shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Mendez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Newton is working away from the top position though.
