PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Kolton Johnson Jr (ranked 24338 p4p, 25112 weight class) and Simba Smith (ranked 368 p4p, 346 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kolton Johnson Jr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Simba Smith!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Trevor Gratis and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson Jr lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

It looks like Simba Smith has been cut.
Smith tries to clinch up but Johnson Jr circles away and keeps his distance.

Smith has taken the fight to the clinch.
Smith prevents a takedown attempt there.
Smith is trying to push Johnson Jr away but Johnson Jr has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Smith tries to break the clinch but Johnson Jr is controlling the position.
Smith fails to pull guard.
Smith wants to get back to striking at distance but Johnson Jr won't allow it.
Smith is pushing Johnson Jr up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Johnson Jr is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith is trying to drag Johnson Jr to the mat but Johnson Jr just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Smith strikes from the bottom but Johnson Jr uses the opportunity to move to side control.

Johnson Jr is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Smith has escaped the position, nice work there.

You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smith has one of Johnson Jr's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Smith is not content to let Johnson Jr control the position.
Johnson Jr wants to stand but Smith is controlling his arm.
Johnson Jr trying to control the position but Smith is working away.
Smith is trying to get back to his feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Kolton Johnson Jr has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simba Smith.

Johnson Jr shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Smith tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Johnson Jr defends well and Smith ends up having to push Johnson Jr into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Smith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johnson Jr as he avoids it easily.
Smith takes a kick to the side of the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Johnson Jr avoids it really well and circles away.
Kolton Johnson Jr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Johnson Jr lands with a kick to the temple. Smith shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Smith feints and as Johnson Jr raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Johnson Jr wants to get back to his feet but Smith passes into half guard.

Smith slows the pace down in half guard.
Smith lands with a punch from half guard.

Smith perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Smith scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Smith takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Smith pushes Johnson Jr up against the cage in a clinch.
Johnson Jr wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Smith gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Johnson Jr regains guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith content to stall in guard here.
Smith passes into half guard.

Smith is working for a kimura but Johnson Jr is defending it quite comfortably.
Smith uses his free foot to push down on Johnson Jr's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Johnson Jr.

Smith avoids the attempt from Johnson Jr to control.

Smith tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Johnson Jr knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground.

Simba Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Smith closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Johnson Jr quickly recovers to half guard.

Johnson Jr seems a little lost for a moment, as Smith dominates the positioning.
Johnson Jr throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

Smith has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Johnson Jr gets caught napping as Smith dives in and scores a takedown. Johnson Jr manages to retain guard.
Smith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Johnson Jr wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

Smith stands up and waves to Johnson Jr to follow him.

Johnson Jr throws a right hand that Smith ducks under and follows up with a left that Smith also avoids with ease.
Horrible takedown attempt by Johnson Jr or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith, which made it look bad.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
No luck for Johnson Jr with that takedown attempt.

Smith decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Smith stands up out of the half guard.
Smith fails with a takedown attempt.
Smith tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Johnson Jr swivels and escapes.
Smith sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Johnson Jr fails with an attempt to clinch.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Johnson Jr.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Johnson Jr swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
It looked like Johnson Jr was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Johnson Jr is looking to clinch.
Smith wants to counter the offense by Johnson Jr and move into the clinch position.
A chopping leg kick lands by Johnson Jr.
Johnson Jr avoids a kick to the body.
Johnson Jr lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johnson Jr wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.
Johnson Jr throws a body shot but no joy.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johnson Jr as he avoids it easily.
Kolton Johnson Jr has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simba Smith.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Smith.
Johnson Jr takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Smith happy to just control the position for now.

Smith decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Smith rushes Johnson Jr and presses him up against the cage.
Smith has Johnson Jr pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Johnson Jr manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Smith drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johnson Jr tries to pull guard but Smith forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smith tries to pull guard but Johnson Jr holds him up against the cage and eventually Smith drops back down to his feet.
Smith is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Smith prevents a takedown attempt there.
Johnson Jr has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Smith is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Johnson Jr lands with a slapping head kick.
Kolton Johnson Jr is winning the standup battle so far.
Johnson Jr throws a head kick that Smith semi-blocks.
Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Johnson Jr drops down looking for a counter takedown but Smith sprawls and moves away.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Kolton Johnson Jr.
I think Johnson Jr has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
