PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Stuart Burrows (ranked 333 p4p, 438 weight class) and Mickey Cowan (ranked 17 p4p, 25 weight class). Burrows comes to the cage accompanied by Baba O'Riley. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Stuart Burrows!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mickey Cowan!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Chad Campbell and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burrows takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Cowan on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Cowan fails to land with a series of punches.

Burrows shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Burrows is trying to work for a kimura but Cowan is defending well.
Burrows working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Cowan's thigh. Cowan counters though and makes it back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burrows wants to control from the top but Cowan keeps moving.

Burrows trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Cowan manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!


Burrows has his foot on Cowan's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cowan works his way back into a safe position though.

Cowan looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Cowan wants to sweep but no luck.
Burrows might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Burrows stands and throws Cowan's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Burrows tries to advance position but instead Cowan slips a leg back in to half guard.
Burrows is looking to stall here but Cowan recovers full guard.

Burrows trying to control but Cowan is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Burrows advances to half guard.
Burrows is looking to take a break and control but Cowan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Burrows is thwarting Cowan's attempts to control the position.
Burrows seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Cowan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Burrows looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Cowan is looking to improve his position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Burrows trying to control the action but Cowan is working from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Cowan lands a body shot.
Burrows goes for a double leg but Cowan avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cowan continues to drive forward.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Cowan manages to break the clinch.
Mickey Cowan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cowan misses the shot to the body.
Burrows half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Burrows shoots in looking for a takedown. Cowan tries to sprawl out of it but Burrows keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cowan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Stuart Burrows will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Burrows looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Cowan throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Burrows cracks a nice hook into Cowan's ribs.
Cowan lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Cowan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
A little jabbing left from Cowan on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Cowan gets caught napping as Burrows dives in and scores a takedown. Cowan manages to retain guard.
Burrows tries to free his leg and advance position but Cowan is retaining full guard.
Burrows works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Burrows is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Cowan reverses the position - he's now on top in Burrows's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Burrows is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Burrows is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cowan defends well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Burrows is fighting to break Cowan's control of his arms but Cowan is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Burrows trying to control the position from guard on top but Cowan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Burrows pushes down on Cowan's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Cowan felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Cowan won't allow Burrows to pass to mount.
Burrows is trying to control the action in half guard but Cowan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Burrows is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Cowan is refusing to be controlled, as Burrows sits in half guard.

Burrows is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Cowan sees it coming and defends easily.
Burrows tries to pass to full mount but Cowan defends it.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Cowan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Burrows. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Burrows misses the body punch
and Cowan counters with a stiff right hand.
Burrows lands a slapping body shot.
Burrows slips under a jab from Cowan.
Burrows throws a lazy right hand but Cowan sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Cowan takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Burrows steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Cowan.
Burrows's jab looks to have found its range, popping Cowan under the eye.
Burrows moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Cowan throws a hook but Burrows blocks it.
A slow jab from Burrows misses its intended target.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Burrows takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Burrows throws a body punch but Cowan moves out of range.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Stuart Burrows will probably get the nod.

Burrows tries to pull guard but Cowan won't allow it.

Burrows lands a left hand that snaps the head of Cowan backwards.
Cowan lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Cowan misses with a hook to the ribs.

Cowan breaks the clinch.
Cowan takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cowan lands a nice leg kick that just misses Burrows's sensitive parts.

Cowan takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Cowan throws a hook but Burrows avoids it easily.
Burrows uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cowan.
Cowan throws a shot from downtown. Burrows moves away and avoids it.
Burrows throws a lazy right hand but Cowan sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Cowan takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Burrows uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Cowan.
Burrows sizes up Cowan with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

and Cowan connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Cowan takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Burrows swings for the body but Cowan moves out of range.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Burrows is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Cowan defends it well.
Burrows is trying to control. Cowan wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Cowan is staying active underneath Burrows, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Burrows seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Cowan is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
