PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dick Pawlik (ranked 5 p4p, 27 weight class) and Evan Duvernay (ranked 1 p4p, 3 weight class). Pawlik's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, John Butler - Ocean . Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Dick Pawlik!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Evan Duvernay!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Duvernay lands with a shot to the body.
Pawlik lands with a good body shot.
Duvernay misses with an attempted mid kick.
Duvernay throws a leg kick but Pawlik sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Pawlik attempts a counter takedown but Duvernay avoids it well and moves away.

Pawlik fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Duvernay to the ground. Pawlik is now in Duvernay's guard.
Duvernay is trying to keep Pawlik in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pawlik lands a couple of elbows.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pawlik can't keep his opponent in guard - Duvernay advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Duvernay perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Duvernay prevents Pawlik from improving his position.
Pawlik manages to get to full guard.

Duvernay trying to stand up but can't free himself from Pawlik's guard.
Duvernay wants to control from the top but Pawlik keeps moving.
Pawlik can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Duvernay controls the pace.

Pawlik is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Duvernay is staying tight to Pawlik's torso, preventing him from escaping.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pawlik seems a little lost for a moment, as Duvernay dominates the positioning.
Pawlik is trying to get back to half guard.
Pawlik is trying to escape the position but Duvernay is controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Duvernay wants to land a leg kick but Pawlik is out of range.
Duvernay goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Pawlik takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Evan Duvernay dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Pawlik will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Pawlik throws a predictable looking body shot
and Duvernay makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Duvernay lunges at Pawlik with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Pawlik's hand.
Pawlik looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Duvernay throws a body kick that misses.
No joy there for Pawlik, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
A slow jab from Duvernay misses its intended target.
Pawlik dips to his left and cracks Duvernay with an uppercut!
Pawlik on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Duvernay is trying to stand.

Pawlik looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Pawlik is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Duvernay is in trouble now - Pawlik has advanced to mount!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Pawlik swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Duvernay is now in Pawlik's guard. A big mistake from Pawlik there, giving up the dominant position!

Pawlik has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Duvernay can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Pawlik working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Duvernay doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Duvernay manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Duvernay has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Pawlik throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Evan Duvernay showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Pawlik working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Pawlik is looking to take a break and control but Duvernay is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Pawlik has hold of Duvernay's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Duvernay tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Pawlik cranks the arm and Duvernay screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Duvernay, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:18 of round 4, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Dick Pawlik!
