PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Turgeon (ranked 866 p4p, 1142 weight class) and Pete Tyler (ranked 129 p4p, 170 weight class). Pete Tyler told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 11 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Patrick Turgeon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Pete Tyler! The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, William Gold and Daniel Bishop.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tyler with a nice cross. A good leg kick by Tyler. Tyler throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Tyler lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Turgeon has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Cope's in the buildup to the fight. Tyler works Turgeon's body with a nice hook. Turgeon drops his hands momentarily and Tyler takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
It looks like Patrick Turgeon has been cut. Turgeon takes one on the button. Pete Tyler seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tyler uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Turgeon.
A head kick misses from Tyler. Tyler scoring well with a low kick there.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Tyler throws a leg kick which misses Turgeon's front leg but catches the back leg as Turgeon tries to avoid it. Tyler throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Turgeon on the side of the head. Turgeon tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Tyler manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Tyler throws a solid leg kick but Turgeon takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Tyler. Tyler swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Turgeon swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tyler moves away from the strike by Turgeon. Tyler lands a high kick to the side of Turgeon's head that stuns him and send him tumbling down to the canvas! Tyler dives into guard, looking to finish. Tyler looking to sit in guard and control but Turgeon gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Turgeon tries to free his leg and advance position but Tyler is retaining full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Tyler is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Tyler looking for a sweep. Not yet Tyler, not yet. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Tyler throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Tyler has an active guard here but Turgeon has managed to pass into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tyler looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Tyler has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Turgeon escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Turgeon! Turgeon misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Tyler is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Turgeon off and has taken his back! Turgeon rolls, trying to escape but Tyler keeps control of the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Turgeon wants to control his opponent's hands but Tyler gets his hands free. Tyler is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Turgeon knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Turgeon for a finish. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Turgeon tries to roll but Tyler sticks to his back.
Tyler throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch. Tyler is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Turgeon defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. Tyler has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Turgeon! Can he survive? No! He's out! Tyler gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
