PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Saw Chen (ranked 4700 p4p, 4639 weight class) and Kung Li (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Saw Chen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kung Li!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Paulo Santos and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chen misses with a few strikes there.
A slow jab from Li misses its intended target.
Chen bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Chen throws a push kick but Li slaps the foot to one side.
Chen digs a good body shot into Li's ribs.
Li displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Chen.
Li looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Li looks to land a right hand but Chen moved out of range.

Li instigates a clinch.
Chen changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Li fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Li scores with a crisp jab that stopped Chen in his tracks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Li throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Chen misses with a two punch combination.
Li throws a hook but Chen avoids it easily.
Chen walks into a left hand.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Li, as that shot connected.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Li scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Li closes the distance and clinches.
Li jumps guard but Chen turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Li will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Chen up against the cage.

Li escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Li pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Chen moves out of range as Li strikes.
Li slips a jab and a cross from Chen.
Li looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Chen is fending him off so far but Li persists. Nope, Chen circles away and we're back to standing.
Li fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Chen manages to avoid it.
Li waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Chen.
Li connects with a crisp jab.
Chen shoots for a takedown but Li saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Li is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Saw Chen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Li lands the left hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Chen keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Li.
A jab from Li misses.
Chen moves away from the strike by Li.
Chen fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Li has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Li moves into the clinch.

Li pulls guard successfully.
Li looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Chen puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Chen stands up from half guard.
Chen throws a leg kick but Li sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Li lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Chen takes one to the chin there.
Li is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Chen had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush.
Li shoots in and drives through. Chen sprawls well.
Li shoots in for a takedown but Chen shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Li gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Chen fails to pull guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Li cracks Chen with a nice body shot.
Chen has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Li avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Chen is breathing heavily.

Li jumps into guard, dragging Chen to the mat.

Li looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Chen passes into side control.
Li tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Chen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Li is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Chen tries for a kimura but Li is defending well.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Chen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Li is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Li tries to improve position but can't.

Chen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Li is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Chen is controlling him well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kung Li dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Li gets a clinch.

Chen breaks the clinch.
Li misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Chen goes for a double leg but Li avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Li continues to drive forward.
Chen fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Chen misses with a short punch on the inside.
A head punch on the inside from Li fails to land.
Li swings wildly with an uppercut but Chen uses good head movement to avoid it.
Chen misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Li.
Li lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Li breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Li forces Chen back against the cage and clinches.
Li is trying to pull guard but Chen has him pressed against the cage.
Chen jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Li walks away with a smile on his face. Chen gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Saw Chen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chen swats away the attempt to clinch by Li.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sloppy strikes from Li. Those never looked like landing.
Chen moves out of range of the strikes.
Chen throws a head kick but Li moves out of range.
Chen wants to clinch up but Li keeps it at a distance.

Chen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Li, pushing him back against the cage.
Chen tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Li just stands there and leans against the cage.
Chen is looking for a takedown.
A short left from Li.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
A left hand lands to the body for Li.
Chen blocking some punches.
Li has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Li lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Li has a couple of punches blocked by Chen.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Li.
Li lands an uppercut.
Li lands a body shot.

Li pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Li cracks Chen with an open hand slap.

Chen is rocked!
Li tries to work over Chen's front leg with a kick but Chen checks it.
Oh Chen is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Li drops a shoulder and throws an uppercut that cracks Chen right on the button. Chen goes down! Li follows him to the mat and finishes the job with more strikes! Li gets the win via TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:12 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kung Li!
Kung Li decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
