The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thompson wants to clinch. Thompson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Thompson throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Thompson is keen to just control but Costello is a slippery customer. Costello is looking to control Thompson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Costello avoid being mounted? Thompson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Costello's head. Costello is refusing to be controlled, as Thompson sits in half guard. Costello won't allow Thompson to pass to mount. Thompson is looking to take a break and control but Costello is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Thompson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Costello to the mat! Costello manages to get full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Thompson circles away from the clinch attempt and Thompson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Costello! Thompson prevents Costello from getting the reversal. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Costello sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Thompson tries to pass the half guard into mount. Costello knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Costello moves into full guard.

Joe Thompson dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Costello gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily so Thompson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Costello trying to control the position.
Thompson's corner is telling him to maintain position. Thompson with a flurry of punches that miss. Thompson decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Costello misses with a double jab.
John Costello seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Thompson fails in his attempt to clinch. Thompson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Costello to the mat! Costello manages to get full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Costello looking for a triangle here. Thompson is fighting it but it looks tight! Costello pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Thompson is tapping out - this one is all over!
