PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between The Paladin Dragon (ranked 3104 p4p, 4698 weight class) and Basil Shabazz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, The Paladin Dragon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Basil Shabazz!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Albert Achterberg and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Dragon with that takedown attempt.
A combination from Shabazz does no damage.
Shabazz lands a glancing blow to the side of Dragon's head.
Shabazz misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Dragon.

Dragon rushes Shabazz and presses him up against the cage.
A nice left hand lands by Shabazz.

Dragon tightens his grip and picks Shabazz up, before dumping him to the ground. Shabazz manages to land in guard.

Dragon decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Shabazz, up you get!
Shabazz falls off balance throwing a combination

and Dragon counters by moving into the clinch.
Shabazz fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Dragon blocking some punches.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Dragon stalling the fight.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Dragon obliges.

Dragon manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Shabazz trying to control the position from guard on top but Dragon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shabazz stopping the sweep attempt from Dragon.
Shabazz wants to control from the top but Dragon keeps moving.

Dragon working for a triangle but Shabazz defends it easily.
Dragon pulls Shabazz in close to prevent any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shabazz seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Shabazz trying to control but Dragon is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Dragon holds on and takes a little breather.

Dragon working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shabazz doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shabazz manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Shabazz postures up.

Dragon keeping moving, preventing Shabazz from controlling successfully.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Shabazz swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Shabazz misses with a shot to the body

and Dragon counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Dragon.

Dragon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shabazz fails to land with a series of punches.
A left lands for Shabazz.
Dragon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Shabazz circles away.
A little jabbing left from Shabazz on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Shabazz tries to clinch up.
Dragon tries a head kick but it misses.
Dragon swats away the attempt to clinch by Shabazz.
Shabazz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A combination from Shabazz does no damage.

Dragon looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Shabazz!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
A lull in the action here as Dragon stalls from top position.
Dragon seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shabazz for as long as he can get away with.
Dragon working away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that The Paladin Dragon will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Shabazz misses with a leg kick

and Dragon counters by clinching up.

Dragon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Shabazz moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
A combination from Shabazz does no damage.
Dragon takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Shabazz throws a combination that misses

and Dragon counters with a nice double leg into side control. Shabazz won't be happy with that.
Shabazz parries the strikes from Dragon easily there. Dragon is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Shabazz to escape.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Dragon wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Shabazz, who protects the arm well.
Dragon trying to control the position but Shabazz is working away.
Dragon takes a little break here. Shabazz wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Dragon is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Shabazz has escaped the position, nice work there.
Shabazz is trying to get back to half guard.
Shabazz wants to control but Dragon postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Dragon is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Shabazz has escaped the position, nice work there.
Dragon is staying tight to Shabazz's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Shabazz is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Dragon decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Sloppy strikes from Shabazz. Those never looked like landing.

Shabazz lands a jab-cross combination.
Basil Shabazz seems to be getting the better of the standup.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Dragon checks a leg kick.
Dragon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shabazz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

and Dragon holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Shabazz's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Dragon has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Shabazz avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Dragon as Shabazz tries to tie him up.

Dragon's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Dragon misses with a two punch combination.
Shabazz is looking for the big counter here.
Dragon will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Shabazz lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for The Paladin Dragon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dragon looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shabazz is fending him off so far but Dragon persists. Nope, Shabazz circles away and we're back to standing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Shabazz gets through Dragon's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Shabazz is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Dragon is keeping busy.
Dragon has Shabazz pushed against the cage.
Dragon is looking to take this one to the mat.

Dragon blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Dragon is trying to pull guard but Shabazz has him pressed against the cage.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that The Paladin Dragon will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Dragon lands a two punch combo.
Shabazz jabs Dragon right on the nose. Dragon blinks but takes it well.
Dragon just misses with a punch to the body.
Shabazz looks to land a body kick but Dragon moved away.

Dragon clinches.

Dragon drags the fight down to the ground.
Shabazz trying to control but Dragon is working from the bottom.
Shabazz pushes down on Dragon's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Dragon tries to roll over but Shabazz keeps him under control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shabazz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dragon keeps working.

Dragon pushes Shabazz off and gets back to his feet.
Shabazz works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Shabazz scores with a sloppy right hand. Dragon should have avoided that one.

Dragon clinches up with Shabazz and pushes him back against the cage.

Dragon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shabazz throws a right and a left that both miss.
Shabazz lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Shabazz gets tackled into the cage by Dragon. Dragon maintains the clinch.
Dragon is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Shabazz pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Shabazz misses with some punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shabazz is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Shabazz just leaning against Dragon, taking a breather.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Dragon putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Shabazz in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Dragon is looking for a takedown.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Shabazz working hard to break the clinch.

Dragon gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Dragon looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Dragon wants to control but Shabazz is keeping him busy.

and Dragon counters with a left and a right that stings Shabazz.
Dragon misses with a two punch combination.
Shabazz wants to counter the offense by Dragon and move into the clinch position.
Basil Shabazz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Dragon closes the distance and clinches.

Dragon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shabazz lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Dragon throws a shot to the body.
Dragon fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for The Paladin Dragon. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Dragon has managed to clinch.

Dragon breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Dragon's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Shabazz connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Dragon scrambles back to his feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Shabazz throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Dragon looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
The Paladin Dragon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Shabazz misses with a low kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
The Paladin Dragon showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Dragon, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
