PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Cole (ranked 340 p4p, 518 weight class) and Bryant Smith (ranked 49 p4p, 74 weight class). Smith is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Television - Marquee Moon. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 21 - 11 - 3, fighting out of New York, James Cole! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 23 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bryant Smith! The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Francis DeMontford and Summer Carpenter.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A shot to the body from Smith misses and Cole counters with a low kick, right behind Smith 's knee. Smith takes a swing at Cole's ribcage but misses. Cole was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Cole avoids a low kick by using good footwork. A little feinted left hand from Cole on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Cole takes a body punch but keeps moving. Smith blocks a head kick by Cole.
Cole throws a body kick that misses. Smith looks to throw the jab but Cole is out of range. Smith connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Cole ducks under a wild hook from Smith. Smith cracks Cole with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Smith throws a body punch but Cole moves out of range. Cole misses with a leg kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smith throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Left hook, right uppercut from Smith. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Smith uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Cole keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Smith will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith throws a sloppy body shot
and Cole counters with a three punch combo that has Smith backing up. Smith nods at Cole to acknowledge the strikes. Cole is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.
Cole moves into range and connects with a jab. Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Cole moves out of range easily. Smith throws a body shot but no joy. Sloppy strikes from Smith. Those never looked like landing. Cole throws out a powerful jab. Smith throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Cole sees it coming and avoids it easily. Smith is sent reeling backwards by a solid uppercut. He barely regains his balance and Cole moves in for the kill throwing a continuous barrage of punches that force the ref to step in.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). James Cole! A less than humble James Cole misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
