The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mata is defended easily by Saldini.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mata looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Saldini is on top in guard.

Mata working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Saldini doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Saldini manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Mata is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at New York Public Gym, so we'll see if he gets out of it.
Mata is controlling an arm, preventing Saldini from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Mata tries to reverse the position but Saldini maintains control.

Saldini takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Saldini prevents Mata from improving his position.
Saldini wants to take a breather but Mata is having none of it.
