PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tj Pen (ranked 3677 p4p, 4819 weight class) and Craig Barns (ranked 74 p4p, 92 weight class). Craig Barns will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tj Pen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Craig Barns!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barns shoots in for a takedown but Pen shows good takedown defense.
Pen has his takedown stuffed
and Barns counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Pen thinking.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Barns enables Pen to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Barns manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Barns wants to sweep but no luck.
Pen throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Barns can do anything to dispel that myth.
Barns utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Barns throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Pen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barns is adopting a defensive guard.
Pen trying to control the position from guard on top but Barns is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pen lands a couple of digs.
Pen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Pen working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Barns's head.
Pen wants to control from the top but Barns keeps moving.

Barns had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pen defends it easily.
Barns is trying to control the position but Pen postures up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nice sprawl there from Pen as Barns shoots in.
Barns lands a jab to the nose.

Pen looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pen thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pen passes into side control, despite Barns's attempt to control the position.
Barns is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Pen is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Pen lands a nice shot to the head.
Barns wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Barns is looking to get to half guard.
Barns is in a horrible position here. Pen smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Barns keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Pen lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Pen tries to control but Barns wriggling away.
Pen is landing with some decent strikes but Barns is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Pen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Barns is in a horrible position here. Pen smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pen lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Pen landing strikes from the mount.
Barns is trying desperately to improve position.
Barns wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Barns is in all sorts of trouble here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tj Pen dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Barns leaves Pen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Barns shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pen but Pen pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Pen fails to land the takedown.
No luck for Pen with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tj Pen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pen.

Barns darts in looking for a takedown but Pen gets double underhooks and turns Barns into the cage.
Pen closes the distance and clinches up with Barns, looking for a takedown. Pen pushes Barns against the cage but Barns circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Pen looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Barns is fending him off so far but Pen persists. Nope, Barns circles away and we're back to standing.
Barns is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Barns scores with a nice strike.

Barns stuffs the takedown.
Barns misses with a takedown attempt - Pen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Barns tries for a takedown but Pen sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Barns tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pen swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Barns is defended easily by Pen.

Barns throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Pen tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Barns is in Pen's guard.
Tj Pen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Pen controls Barns momentarily but Barns frees himself.

Pen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Barns really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pen. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Barns is controlling Pen's trapped leg to prevent Pen from advancing to side control.
Pen lands with a punch from half guard.
Barns is refusing to be controlled, as Pen sits in half guard.
Pen takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Barns wants to control but Pen is keeping busy.

Pen winds up and cracks Barns with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Pen lands a nice short elbow.

Ground and pound from Pen.
Barns is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Ground and pound from Pen.
Pen seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Pen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Pen lands a nice short elbow.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pen connects with a nice short shot to Barns's temple.
Pen looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Barns with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Pen controlling the pace.
Pen lands strikes from half guard.
Barns tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Pen has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Pen putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tj Pen dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Pen wants to clinch but Barns slips to the side
and Barns counters with a stiff right hand.
Barns looks to land a combination but Pen avoids it well.
Barns wants to clinch up but Pen keeps it at a distance.

Pen bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Pen working the ground and pound from side control.
Pen lands an elbow.
Barns taking punishment in the form of punches.
Barns takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Pen controls the position.
Pen lands an elbow.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Pen is putting a hurting on Barns here, landing some big shots from side control.
Pen in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Pen cracks Barns with a big right hand but Barns just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Pen scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Barns to see if he's OK.

The referee warns Barns that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Pen connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Barns takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Barns tries to lock up and control but Pen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Pen trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Barns tries to reverse the position but Pen maintains control.
Pen has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Barns's face.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Pen cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Pen fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Barns is rocked!
Pen is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Barns is still in real trouble! Can Pen finish him?
Barns takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Pen's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
