PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brendan Ward (ranked 4568 p4p, 6253 weight class) and Juan Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brendan Ward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Juan Khan!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Khan's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Khan duly obliges.
Khan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ward pinned against the cage. Ward gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Khan misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Ward dives in and scores a takedown into Khan's guard.
Ward controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Khan is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ward is controlling him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Khan not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ward is in close to Khan's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Ward pushes down on Khan's leg and manages to get into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Ward gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Ward fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Khan to the ground. Ward is now in Khan's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ward gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Khan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ward's waist but Ward gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Khan off to one side.
Khan slips a jab and a cross from Ward.
Khan darts in looking for a takedown but Ward gets double underhooks and turns Khan into the cage.
Brendan Ward has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Juan Khan.
Khan looks winded!

Khan gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Ward controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Ward gets to his feet. Khan looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Ward closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Ward is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Khan is just riding it out for now. Ward eventually gives up the hold.
Ward is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Ward drops an elbow to the side of Khan's head.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ward works his foot free and advances to mount.
Ward lands a nice shot to the head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Ward has hold of Khan's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Khan manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Ward lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Ward working for a guillotine from mount but Khan is in no mood to give up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Brendan Ward dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Ward throws a push kick but Khan slaps the foot to one side.
Ward is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Khan can do to turn this around?
Ward throws a body shot but no joy.

Ward manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Khan on his heels. He'll look to pass Khan's guard now, I'm sure.
Khan is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Ward dives into side control.

Khan takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Khan tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Ward is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Khan will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ward stands up and beckons Khan to his feet.
Khan is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ward avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
No luck for Khan with that takedown attempt.

Ward tries to keep at a distance but Khan has taken the fight into the clinch.
Ward is struggling to control the position.

Ward manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Ward manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Khan manages to get himself to full guard.

Ward scoring with some ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Khan working a defensive guard but Ward passes into half guard.
Ward controlling the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Khan wants to improve his position but Ward is controlling well.

Ward is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Khan doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ward.
Ward wants to pass to mount but Khan is defending the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Ward is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Ward looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Khan with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Still in half guard, Ward seems content to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ward is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Khan!
Ward pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Ward looking for a guillotine from mount but Khan is having none of it.
Brendan Ward overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Khan tries to lock up and control but Ward gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Ward tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Ward fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ward takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Ward has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Ward scores with a couple of good head shots there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

It looks like Juan Khan has been cut.

Khan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Khan is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Ward dives into side control.

Ward staying calm.
Ward cracks Khan with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Ward scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Khan to see if he's OK.
Ward takes a little break here. Khan wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ward is working to tighten his grip on Khan's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Khan has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Ward is really squeezing tight and eventually Khan passes out! Ward breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Brendan Ward!
