Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 15 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Javier Martinez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, William Tate! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Robert Twigg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tate tries to keep at a distance but Martinez has taken the fight into the clinch. Martinez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Tate taking a bit of punishment here - Martinez scoring with strikes. Martinez decides to stand up, so the ref orders Tate to his feet. Javier Martinez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tate throws a right hand that Martinez ducks under and follows up with a left that Martinez also avoids with ease. A little feinted left hand from Martinez on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Martinez fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Martinez tries to keep at a distance but Tate has taken the fight into the clinch. Martinez content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Martinez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. This has been an exciting period of action! Tate throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Martinez moves into the clinch. Martinez creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Tate's defenses.
It looks like William Tate has been cut. Martinez has hold of one of Tate's legs. Tate is fighting the takedown attempt but Martinez gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Martinez chips away with some ground and pound. Martinez is stalling in the full guard. Martinez scoring with some ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martinez works over Tate with some ground and pound from guard. Martinez scoring with punches to the head and body. Martinez postures up and lands a big shot to Tate's brow. Martinez gets to his feet - Tate follows without any prompting. Tate clinches with his opponent.
Martinez has clasped his hands together around Tate's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Martinez working the ground and pound. Martinez scoring with punches and elbows. Martinez cracks Tate with a big right hand but Tate just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Tate is rocked! Martinez scores with a big shot from side control... and another... and another! Oh Tate is done here - save him referee! More strikes land and eventually the ref does step in and Martinez can finally stop beating on his defenseless opponent!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Javier Martinez! In his post fight interview, Javier Martinez started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
