Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 27 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pablo Torres! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Peetu Tam! The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Sergei Dronov and Viktor Lagutenko.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tam swats away the attempt to clinch by Torres. Tam changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Torres checks a leg kick nicely. Torres lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
It looks like Peetu Tam has been cut. Tam is looking to land body kicks. Peetu Tam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tam shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Torres counters with a straight right hand. Torres blocks a leg kick. Tam misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Torres gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Both guys are working to get underhooks. Tam breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tam misses with a head kick.
Tam keeps the fight on the outside. Tam feints and then cracks Torres's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Torres down. Torres closes the distance and pushes Tam back into the ropes. Torres working some nice short punches in the clinch. I was talking to Torres's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Torres scores with a shoulder strike.
Tam is rocked!
That has opened up Peetu Tam's cut even more.
That's one minute gone in the round. Torres lands with a short head shot on the inside. Tam is still on wobbly legs! Can Torres finish him? A head punch blocked on the inside by Tam. Tam struggles to land a body shot inside as Torres controls his hands.
Torres misses with a short punch on the inside. Torres dips a shoulder and cracks Tam with a mighty uppercut! Tam falls back against the ropes and Torres unloads with a barrage of strikes! Tam is completely out with his eyes open, only supported by the ropes! Save him ref! Eventually the ref decides to do his job and jumps in - Torres screams abuse at the incompetent official before going over to celebrate with his corner. Brutal stuff!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:14 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Pablo Torres! Pablo Torres managed to slip a mention for his sponsors, Neon Zombie, into his post fight interview.
