And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 8 wins and 4 losses; Shaka Zulu! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Percy O'Donnell and Don Winkell.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Zulu gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Silva Jr looking for a takedown. Silva Jr has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Zulu regains guard immediately. The fighters are battling for position here. Zulu manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Zulu is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Zulu is looking for a triangle but Silva Jr pushes his legs off easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Zulu is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. That's one minute gone in the round. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Zulu in particular looking to stall. Let's hope that Zulu has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Zulu wants to control but Silva Jr is keeping him busy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Silva Jr trying to control but Zulu postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Zulu tries to pass the half guard into mount. Silva Jr knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Silva Jr is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Oblivion Gate, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Zulu prevents Silva Jr from improving his position. Zulu tries to pass to full mount but Silva Jr defends it.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Zulu has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Silva Jr is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Zulu. Score +3 for passing guard: Silva Jr (7) vs (2) Zulu Zulu manages to work his way to half guard, despite Silva Jr's best efforts. Zulu makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Zulu. Silva Jr slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Zulu wants to sweep but no luck.

Zulu tries to land a sweep but no joy. Zulu is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Zulu is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Zulu tries to free his leg and advance position but Silva Jr is retaining full guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Zulu wants to control from the top but Silva Jr keeps moving. Zulu seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
And that's the end of the fight! Silva Jr takes the fight on points by 7 to 4. A relieved looking Rich Silva Jr thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
