PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Shortman (ranked 3121 p4p, 23806 weight class) and Charles Foster (ranked 106 p4p, 230 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Foster's choice of entrance music: Nuclear Power Trio - A Clear and Present Rager. James Shortman has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Shortman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Charles Foster!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Paul Aken and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Foster throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Shortman was covering up waiting for the punch and Foster finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Foster slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Foster trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Shortman is looking for a triangle but Foster pushes his legs off easily.
Foster sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Shortman has his foot on Foster's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Foster works his way back into a safe position though.

Shortman is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Foster is aware though and is defending well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Foster content to stall in guard here.
Shortman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Shortman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Foster decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Shortman, up you get!
Shortman needs to keep his hands up - Foster had a free shot at his head there.
Shortman dives in and grabs Foster's left leg, looking for a takedown. Foster pushes down on Shortman's head and hops out.
Shortman goes for a double leg but Foster avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Foster continues to drive forward.

Foster pulls guard successfully.
Foster is pulling down on Shortman's head to control his posture.
Foster is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Foster really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Shortman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Well, if Foster is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shortman is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Foster pulls his head out easily.
Foster trying to control from half guard but Shortman is working away.
Foster is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Shortman won't allow Foster to pass to mount.
Foster is trying to control. Shortman wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Shortman is refusing to be controlled, as Foster sits in half guard.

Foster is looking to take a break and control but Shortman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Shortman looking for a kimura from the bottom but Foster passes into side control!

Shortman tries to buck Foster off but Foster is having none of it.

Foster decides to stand back up. Foster steps back and let's Shortman get back to his feet.
Foster should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Shortman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Foster tries to avoid it but Shortman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Foster to the ground. Foster escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Shortman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shortman throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Foster's waist but Foster gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Shortman off to one side.
Foster looks like he wanted to counter with a high kick but didn't throw it.

Foster gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Foster breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Foster fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Shortman to the ground. Foster is now in Shortman's guard.

Shortman escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Foster gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Foster wants to control from the top but Shortman keeps moving.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Shortman looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Shortman working for submissions but it's allowed Foster to get to half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Charles Foster dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Foster scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Shortman is defended easily by Foster.
Shortman has his takedown stuffed

and Foster counters by moving into the clinch.

Foster turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Foster stands up and beckons Shortman to his feet.
Foster scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shortman.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Shortman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Foster clinches with his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Foster is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Shortman can't fight it off and eventually Foster manages to take the fight to the floor. Shortman looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Shortman throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Foster escapes and throws Shortman's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Foster has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Shortman shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Foster pinned against the cage. Foster gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Foster slaps away a takedown attempt from Shortman, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Foster wants to counter the offense by Shortman and move into the clinch position.
Foster has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Foster shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Foster has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Shortman to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Foster is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Shortman pulls down on the head and he's put Foster to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:22 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). James Shortman!
After the fight, James Shortman was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
