CWC 300 - SUPERNOVA PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 25 wins and 20 losses; Bjj Steel! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 12 wins and 13 losses; Ceph Alopodis! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Mauricio Rocha and Felipe Paraventi.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Steel stuffs the takedown. Alopodis decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Steel (0) vs (2) Alopodis Alopodis wants to take a breather but Steel is having none of it. The fighters are battling for position here. Steel manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Alopodis trying to control but Steel is working from the bottom. Alopodis looking to pass the guard. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Alopodis working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Steel really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill... Steel is pulling down on Alopodis's head. It's preventing any offense from Alopodis, at least for the moment. Steel keeping full guard, as Alopodis tries to pass. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Steel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Steel tries to hold on but Alopodis postures up. Steel is controlling an arm, preventing Alopodis from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Steel is squirming around, avoiding Alopodis's attempts to control the action. It's a sloppy attempt though and Steel jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Steel pushes down on Alopodis's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Steel slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Alopodis has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Steel has passed into side control.

Steel trying to control the action but Alopodis is working from the bottom. Alopodis tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Steel wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Alopodis is wriggling around trying to escape.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Steel trying to control but he's not successful this time. Alopodis bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Steel (10) vs (10) Alopodis Alopodis must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Alopodis looking to sit in guard and control but Steel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Steel (12) vs (10) Alopodis Steel trying to control but Alopodis is working from the bottom. Alopodis is trying to control the position but Steel postures up. Steel is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Steel has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Alopodis wants to sweep here but Steel controlling him for the moment.

Steel tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Steel trying to control but Alopodis is having none of it. Steel manages to capitalize on a mistake by Alopodis to take his back! Score +3 for taking back: Steel (18) vs (10) Alopodis Alopodis wants to escape the position.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Steel has good solid back control here. Steel has the hooks in. Alopodis is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Steel slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Alopodis jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Steel manages to avoid the submission attempt. Steel is looking to reverse the position. Alopodis tries to move to mount but Steel blocks the move with his legs. Alopodis tries to move to full mount but Steel actually manages to regain half guard. Steel is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
