PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Harley Bird (ranked 25055 p4p, 23167 weight class) and Mitch McGee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying McGee's choice of entrance music: Survivor - Eye of the Tiger. Mitch McGee will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Harley Bird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mitch McGee!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Andrew Berry and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGee throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Bird.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Bird enables McGee to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Bird manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
McGee stands up over Bird, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Bird working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McGee doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McGee manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Bird had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McGee defends it easily.

Bird is refusing to be controlled, as McGee sits in half guard.
McGee seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
McGee working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
McGee is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

McGee seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bird does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

McGee is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

McGee closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Bird did well to prevent McGee getting side control.
McGee really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bird. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
McGee takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
McGee lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Bird has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

McGee has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

McGee is trying to trip Bird. He has hold of a leg but Bird is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. McGee persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

McGee has Bird pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. McGee pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Bird tumbling to the mat - McGee dives into Bird's guard.

It looks like Harley Bird has been cut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
McGee stands up over Bird, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Bird has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but McGee can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Harley Bird has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mitch McGee is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well McGee has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
