Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pete Ashworth! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Oscar De La Hoya! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Chad Campbell and Jorge Garcia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ashworth shoots in for a takedown but De La Hoya shows good takedown defense. Ashworth tries to keep at a distance but De La Hoya has taken the fight into the clinch. Ashworth with an attempt at a knee that misses.
De La Hoya has had enough of the clinch but Ashworth keeps him there for the moment. Ashworth can't break the clinch.
Ashworth keeps control of De La Hoya as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. De La Hoya is looking to break free of the clinch but Ashworth has double underhooks. Ashworth lands a left hand.
De La Hoya wants to break the clinch but can't.
Ashworth tries for a takedown. No joy.
De La Hoya is looking to break free of the clinch but Ashworth has double underhooks. Ashworth tries to land a knee to the head but De La Hoya blocks with his arms.
De La Hoya managing to block the knees to the body from Ashworth.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ashworth turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! De La Hoya is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
That's one minute gone in the round. De La Hoya on the wrong end of some ground and pound. De La Hoya really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ashworth. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Ashworth wants to control but De La Hoya is keeping him busy. Ashworth is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because De La Hoya is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. De La Hoya wants to get back to his feet. An elbow from Ashworth crashes against the mat.
Ashworth is working to tighten is grip on De La Hoya's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. De La Hoya has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Ashworth is really squeezing tight and eventually De La Hoya passes out! Ashworth breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Pete Ashworth!
