PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jake Shields (ranked 2948 p4p, 3006 weight class) and Emil Nikolov (ranked 330 p4p, 336 weight class). Shields kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Seven Nation Army. Jake Shields had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 156.8lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Shields manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Nikolov on his heels. He'll look to pass Nikolov's guard now, I'm sure. Shields is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shields pushes down on Nikolov's leg and manages to get into half guard. Shields is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Nikolov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Shields. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Shields is looking for a kimura but Nikolov is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Shields to get the leverage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shields seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Nikolov does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Shields is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Shields is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Nikolov defends it well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nikolov is trying to escape back to his feet but Shields uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Shields has an Americana. Nikolov didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Shields is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Shields hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Jake Shields! After the fight, Jake Shields was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
