PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Alfie Shade (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robin Van Laere (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Alfie Shade!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Robin Van Laere!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Andrew Berry and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Laere turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Van Laere moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Van Laere has managed to clinch.
Van Laere wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Shade tries to pull guard but Van Laere holds him up against the cage and eventually Shade drops back down to his feet.
Van Laere wants to get back to striking at distance but Shade won't allow it.
Shade tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Shade tries for a takedown. No joy.

Van Laere breaks from the clinch.
Van Laere throws a right hand that Shade ducks under and follows up with a left that Shade also avoids with ease.
Nice body kick there by Van Laere.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Van Laere misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Van Laere bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

A kick lands to the mid section there for Van Laere.

Van Laere throws a head kick that Shade semi-blocks.
Van Laere lands a nice shot that snaps Shade's head back.
Shade takes a head kick and keeps coming.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Van Laere lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Van Laere pushes Shade away with a front kick.
A head kick from Van Laere lands but Shade takes it in his stride.
Van Laere throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Van Laere tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Shade swivels and escapes.
Van Laere wants to clinch up but Shade keeps it at a distance.
Van Laere throws a head kick but Shade moves out of range.
Shade has his takedown stuffed

and Van Laere counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Shade!

Van Laere stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Van Laere throws a right and a left that Shade avoids nicely.
Van Laere will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Shade closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Shade wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Van Laere, who protects the arm well.
Van Laere is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Shade has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Shade slows the pace down.
Shade is looking to take a break and control but Van Laere is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Van Laere is trying to improve his position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Shade tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Shade looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Shade wants to stand but Van Laere has him controlled and pulls him back into his guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shade has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Van Laere can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The fighters are battling for position here. Shade manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Shade working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Van Laere doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Van Laere manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shade has his foot on Van Laere's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Van Laere works his way back into a safe position though.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Robin Van Laere seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Shade lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Robin Van Laere showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

and Van Laere counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Shade misses with a body kick.

Van Laere is controlling Shade's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Shade is looking to work some ground and pound but Van Laere has wrist control.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Horrible takedown by Shade or perhaps it was just good defense by Van Laere which made him look bad.

Van Laere fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shade sprawls well initially but Van Laere persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Alfie Shade has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alfie Shade.
Well Van Laere has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
