PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Reed Wilkins (ranked 6104 p4p, 23720 weight class) and Greg Bustack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Greg Bustack told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Reed Wilkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Greg Bustack!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bustack wants to clinch but Wilkins slips to the side

and Wilkins counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Wilkins throwing strikes from guard but Bustack blocks nicely.
Wilkins really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Wilkins controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Wilkins sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Bustack's guard.
Wilkins with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wilkins moves into full mount! Bustack won't be happy about that!
Bustack really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wilkins. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Wilkins postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Bustack looks a forlorn figure.

Bustack takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Wilkins takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The referee warns Bustack that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Wilkins jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Bustack is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Bustack and Wilkins has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
A lull in the action here as Wilkins stalls from top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wilkins postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Wilkins is staying tight to Bustack's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Wilkins seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Bustack for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Wilkins tries for a kimura but Bustack is defending well.

Wilkins decides to stand up, so the ref orders Bustack to his feet.

Wilkins is taking a breather. Bustack says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Wilkins shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Bustack manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Bustack gets caught napping as Wilkins dives in and scores a takedown. Bustack manages to retain guard.

Wilkins stands and steps away. Bustack gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Bustack is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Wilkins dives into side control.

Greg Bustack seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Wilkins accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Wilkins drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wilkins jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Wilkins is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Bustack can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Wilkins looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Bustack wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Wilkins.

Wilkins is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Bustack has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Wilkins cracks Bustack with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Wilkins will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Reed Wilkins is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
