PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Don Cortez (ranked 2106 p4p, 23438 weight class) and Jean Yves Theriault (ranked 74 p4p, 157 weight class). Theriault has chosen Klendathu drop as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Cortez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jean Yves Theriault!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Anthony Taglia and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Theriault drives through and clinches with Cortez against the cage.
Theriault tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Theriault lands a body punch in the clinch.
I was talking to Cortez's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Theriault swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Theriault lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Cortez blocks an uppercut.
Theriault looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Cortez tightens his grip and picks Theriault up, before dumping him to the ground. Theriault manages to land in guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Theriault wants to stand but Cortez is controlling the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Theriault pulls Cortez in close to his closed guard and prevents Cortez from doing any damage or advancing position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cortez wants to pass the guard but Theriault is keeping the position.

Cortez trying to mount his opponent but Theriault defends it.

Cortez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Cortez is pressing down on Theriault's thigh, looking to free his foot. Theriault is holding on for now.

Cortez seems to be working for a kimura but Theriault defends the submission attempt.

Theriault is looking to control Cortez's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Theriault avoid being mounted?
Theriault on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Cortez is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Theriault has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cortez is working away from the top position though.
Theriault holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

Theriault wants to get back to his feet.

Theriault has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cortez is working away from the top position though.

Cortez works his foot free and advances to mount.

Theriault is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Theriault tries to lock up and control but Cortez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Cortez lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Theriault can do anything to dispel that myth.
Theriault tries to lock up and control but Cortez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Cortez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Cortez is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Theriault can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Theriault really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cortez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Cortez is landing with some decent strikes but Theriault is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Cortez looks to score with a jab to the body but Theriault is just out of range.
No joy there for Cortez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Cortez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Theriault tries to kick Cortez off but Cortez keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Theriault tries to get to full guard but Cortez has control of the leg.
Theriault wants to control but Cortez is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Cortez is nestled in close to Theriault, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Well, if Cortez is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cortez in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Theriault tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Cortez!

Don Cortez spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
