PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hugh Janus (ranked 4827 p4p, 4864 weight class) and Tim Rich (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hugh Janus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tim Rich!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rich fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Janus avoids it really well and circles away.
Janus shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rich defends it nicely.
Rich stuffs the takedown.
Janus shoots in looking for a takedown. Rich tries to sprawl out of it but Janus keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Rich manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hugh Janus. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice takedown defense from Janus. No joy for Rich on that attempt.
It looked like Janus was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Rich.

Rich successfully pulls guard.
Janus slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Rich tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Janus postures up.
Janus postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Janus is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rich is pulling down on Janus's head. It's preventing any offense from Janus, at least for the moment.
Janus might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Rich lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Rich sitting in guard here, content to control.
Janus knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rich on the ground.
Rich sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Janus's guard.
Rich wants to lay and pray for a moment but Janus keeps working.
Janus wants to get back to full guard.

Janus kicks Rich off and gets back to his feet.

Janus clinches up against the cage.
Janus lands a nice uppercut.

Janus looking for a takedown.
Rich tries to stall but Janus uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Janus is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Rich keeps control of Janus as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Janus drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Janus swings wildly with an uppercut but Rich uses good head movement to avoid it.
Janus jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rich walks away with a smile on his face. Janus gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Rich shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Janus but Janus pushes him off and we're back to square one.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
A head kick misses from Rich.
Rich is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Janus instigates a clinch.
Janus is pressed up against the cage. Rich has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Janus down to the mat. Janus avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Janus throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rich's waist but Rich gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Janus off to one side.
Janus tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Rich was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Janus looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Rich fails with a takedown attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Janus falls off balance throwing a combination
and Rich counters with a one-two to the body.

Rich shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Janus's guard.

Janus is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Hugh Janus dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Janus is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rich can do to turn this around?
Janus avoids a kick to the body.

Rich feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Janus has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Rich has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Janus decides to pull guard.
Janus not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Janus is looking for a triangle but Rich pushes his legs off easily.
Rich trying to control the position from guard on top but Janus is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rich postures up in Janus's guard and throws a big left but Janus blocks it.

Janus is pulling down on Rich's head. It's preventing any offense from Rich, at least for the moment.

Janus tries to get to full guard but Rich has control of the leg.

Hugh Janus overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rich looks to land a strike but Janus avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Janus wants to sweep but no luck.
Rich trying to control but Janus is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Janus rushes Rich and presses him up against the cage.
Janus wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Janus jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rich walks away with a smile on his face. Janus gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Rich shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Janus is trying to defend but Rich finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Janus is looking to control Rich's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Janus avoid being mounted?
Rich wants to pass the guard but Janus is defending well.
Janus is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rich tries to pass the half guard into mount. Janus knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Janus wants to control but Rich is keeping busy.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rich shoots in for a double leg but Janus sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rich tries to clinch but Janus moves away
and Janus counters with a one-two to the body.
Rich is breathing heavily.
Rich has a takedown stuffed.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Hugh Janus dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Janus tries to clinch but Rich is having none of it.

Janus closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Janus takes a little break here. Rich wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Janus in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Rich is not content to let Janus control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Rich's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Janus remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Janus creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Rich sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Janus trying to control the action but Rich is working from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Rich can't do much from the bottom here.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Rich tries for a takedown but Janus circles away easily

and Janus holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Janus pulls guard successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Janus throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Janus throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Rich trying to control but Janus is working from the bottom.

Rich drops back, looking for a kneebar! Janus looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Janus looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Janus!

Rich seems a little lost for a moment, as Janus dominates the positioning.

Rich struggling a bit here.
Janus wants to control but Rich is keeping him busy.

Janus wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rich, who protects the arm well.
Janus lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Rich down.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Janus has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Hugh Janus is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Janus looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Janus swings for the body but Rich moves out of range.
Rich drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Janus defends it well.
Janus defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Rich.
Rich takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Horrible takedown attempt by Rich or perhaps it was just good defense by Janus, which made it look bad.
Hugh Janus has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tim Rich.

Janus clinches.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rich has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Janus is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Janus fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Tim Rich has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hugh Janus is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Janus is looking to take this one to the mat.

Hugh Janus showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Janus has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
