PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Benjamin Griffin (ranked 2670 p4p, 2825 weight class) and Sage Rochester (ranked 297 p4p, 308 weight class). Griffin comes to the cage accompanied by Ordinary Man (Ozzy Osbourne ft. Elton John). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Benjamin Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Sage Rochester!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Andrew Berry and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin leaves Rochester with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Rochester has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Griffin swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Griffin seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
A looping hook to the body misses from Griffin. Rochester does a little dance to reset his feet.
Both fighters circling a little - Rochester finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Rochester shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Griffin as he avoids it easily.
Benjamin Griffin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sage Rochester.

Rochester closes the distance but Griffin moves to the side
and Griffin counters with a lovely shot to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Griffin counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Rochester thinking.

Rochester shoots for a takedown but Griffin saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
It looked like Griffin was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Rochester.

and Rochester takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Sage Rochester seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rochester uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Griffin.
Rochester wants to counter the offense by Griffin and move into the clinch position.
Griffin scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Rochester darts in looking for a takedown but Griffin gets double underhooks and turns Rochester into the cage.

Rochester closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Griffin did well to prevent Rochester getting side control.

Rochester is looking for a kimura here.
Griffin knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rochester on the ground.

Rochester is working for a kimura but Griffin is defending it quite comfortably.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Rochester is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Griffin is refusing to be controlled, as Rochester sits in half guard.

Rochester throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Rochester landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Rochester has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Rochester prevents Griffin from improving his position.
Rochester is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Griffin is looking to control Rochester's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Griffin avoid being mounted?

Rochester is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Rochester with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Rochester looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Griffin with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Rochester is taking a breather. Griffin says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Rochester in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Griffin tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Rochester!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Sage Rochester!
In defeat, Benjamin Griffin stepped up to the mic, saying 'Nobody retires undefeated. I told the world that I was better than Sage but he was the better man tonight.'.
