Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Guilherme Carvalho (ranked 2430 p4p, 2002 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 289 p4p, 241 weight class). Shields has chosen Seven Nation Army as his entrance music. Jake Shields struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 157.9lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. The key to victory for Guilherme Carvalho has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shields takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Shields gets the takedown into side control.
Carvalho tries to bench press Shields off him but Shields keeps the position.
Carvalho is not content to let Shields control the position.

Shields is trying to get an arm triangle but Carvalho is defending well.

Shields thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Carvalho prevents Shields from improving position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Carvalho tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Shields wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Shields advances to mount.
Carvalho is looking to get to half guard.

Shields can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Carvalho is looking to escape.
Carvalho tries to reverse the position but Shields maintains control.
Shields pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.
Carvalho bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Shields manages to get back to half guard.

Shields looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Carvalho has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Carvalho tries to free his leg and advance position but Shields is retaining full guard.
Shields seems keen to control Carvalho's posture.

Shields escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carvalho gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Carvalho wants to pass the guard but Shields is keeping the position.

Shields is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Carvalho tries to free his leg and advance position but Shields is retaining full guard.

Carvalho postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Shields is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Carvalho, into his guard.


Carvalho has an active guard here but Shields has managed to pass into half guard.

Shields is working for a kimura but Carvalho is defending it quite comfortably.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Shields dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Shields looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

Shields feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Shields stays in close to Carvalho's body and controls the position.
Shields won't allow Carvalho to sweep him here.
Shields is pushing down on Carvalho's leg trying to pass to half guard. Carvalho is fighting to maintain full guard but Shields has managed to sneak the leg through.
Carvalho regains full guard. Nicely done.

Carvalho looking for a triangle here. Shields is fighting it but it looks tight! Carvalho pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Shields is tapping out - this one is all over!

In defeat, Jake Shields stepped up to the mic, saying 'As long as you're open-minded you can learn stuff from anyone.'.
