And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 30 wins and 22 losses; Dick Diaz! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Tiny Johnson and Chris Downing.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Nickal fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Diaz sprawls well initially but Nickal persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Nickal (2) vs (0) Diaz Nickal has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Nickal content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Diaz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Nickal is working away from the top position though. Nickal prevents Diaz from improving his position. Diaz keeps trying to improve his position. Nickal content to control rather than advance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Diaz trying to control but Nickal postures up.

Nickal fails to advance to Diaz's back. Nickal content just to control the position here. Diaz is looking to improve his position but Nickal isn't that keen on the idea. Nickal looking to control and managing it successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nickal seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Diaz for as long as he can get away with.

I really don't envy Diaz right now.
What can Diaz do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
