PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Haggar (ranked 1345 p4p, 1267 weight class) and Ivan Samsonov (ranked 201 p4p, 184 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Haggar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 14 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivan Samsonov!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Steven Brown and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Haggar defending well as Samsonov loads up on a big left hand.
Samsonov lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Haggar lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Haggar bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Haggar throws a body punch but Samsonov moves out of range.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Haggar.
Samsonov regains half guard, as Haggar was trying to land strikes.

Samsonov looking for submissions off his back.
Haggar stalling away here and it's allowed Samsonov to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Haggar has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
This has been an exciting period of action!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Haggar accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Samsonov controls Haggar momentarily but Haggar frees himself.
We've been hearing good reports from Haggar's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Samsonov is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Haggar lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Samsonov looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Samsonov bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Haggar's guard.

Samsonov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Haggar wants to improve his position here. There's a bit of a scramble and Samsonov has taken Haggar's back! He's locked on a rear naked choke here and Haggar has been forced to tap!
