PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ron Austin (ranked 24232 p4p, 5710 weight class) and Sterling Ryan (ranked 634 p4p, 585 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 4 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ron Austin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sterling Ryan! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Austin fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Ryan feints the counter takedown. Ryan misses with a body shot.
Ryan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Austin's waist but Austin gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ryan off to one side. Ryan keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Ryan lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Austin circles away quickly and effectively. Austin shoots in and bounces Ryan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Ryan has his feet on Austin's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. Ryan tries a head kick but it misses.
Austin shoots in and drives through. Ryan sprawls well. Ryan wants to counter the offense by Austin and move into the clinch position. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ron Austin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Austin closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Ryan's guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Austin tries to free his leg and advance position but Ryan is retaining full guard. Ryan working a defensive guard here.
Austin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ryan has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Austin has managed to get both his arms back between Ryan's legs - danger averted. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ryan can do anything to dispel that myth. Ryan looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's one minute gone in the round. Austin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ryan swivels though and keeps the full guard. Ryan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Austin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Ryan keeping full guard, as Austin tries to pass. Austin pushes down on Ryan's leg and manages to get into half guard. Ryan has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Austin is working away from the top position though. Ryan looks winded!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Ryan might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Austin haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Austin moves nicely into side control. Austin has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Ryan! Austin fails to move to back control. Ryan wants to control but Austin is having none of it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Austin wants to take Ryan's back here but Ryan is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Austin has hold of Ryan's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Ryan manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Ryan is trying to escape the mount but Austin keeps good control and instead manages to take Ryan's back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ryan is trying to remain composed but Austin is hammering down strikes to the side of his head. Ryan trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble. Ryan wants to get back to his feet. Ryan tries to escape but Austin has the hooks in and won't let him break free. Ryan looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Austin looking for the choke but no joy. Austin working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Ryan is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Austin has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Ryan taps out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Ron Austin!
