PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Shannon Hoon (ranked 6107 p4p, 5191 weight class) and Tommy McCork (ranked 571 p4p, 539 weight class). McCork is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Alternative Ulster by Stiff Little Fingers. Tommy McCork told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Shannon Hoon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tommy McCork!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Yves DeLean and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hoon fails with the takedown
letting McCork counter with a right hand.
Hoon just misses with a punch to the body.
Hoon will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
McCork is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
A lazy body kick from Hoon

and McCork counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Hoon manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McCork manages to get himself to full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as McCork holds on and takes a little breather.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hoon distracts McCork with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
McCork wants to get back to his feet but Hoon is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Hoon won't allow McCork to sweep him here.
Hoon tries to stand but McCork is controlling from the bottom.
Hoon wants to pass the guard but McCork is keeping the position.
Hoon trying to control but McCork is working from the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McCork can do anything to dispel that myth.
Hoon scoring with some ground and pound.
Hoon trying to stand up but can't free himself from McCork's guard.
McCork has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Hoon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hoon won't allow McCork to sweep him here.
McCork seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Hoon gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and McCork counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Hoon!
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shannon Hoon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hoon tries to buck McCork off but McCork is having none of it.
McCork lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Hoon down.

McCork slows the pace down.
Hoon is working to avoid the ground and pound but McCork connects with a decent elbow.
Hoon is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

McCork working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Hoon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
McCork landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Hoon is trying to get back to full guard.
Hoon is working hard here to advance position.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hoon is trying to defend against the ground and pound but McCork scores with a couple of nice shots.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy McCork dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

McCork connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Hoon's hands.
McCork displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Hoon throws out the jab.
McCork drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Hoon defends it well.
Hoon looks to clinch

and McCork counters with a single leg into guard. Hoon didn't expect that.

Hoon has his feet on McCork's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Hoon shoots and misses
and McCork counters with a left and a right that stings Hoon.

Hoon is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McCork dips to his left and cracks Hoon with an uppercut!
Oh Hoon is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hoon dives in and grabs McCork's left leg, looking for a takedown. McCork pushes down on Hoon's head and hops out.
McCork with the counter takedown but Hoon avoids it easily.
McCork is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Hoon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McCork as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shannon Hoon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McCork is looking for an opening here. He's unloaded a big left hand that catches Hoon flush on the jaw and sends him tumbling to the canvas! Hoon is out cold! McCork holds back from landing any unnecessary shots to his unconscious opponent, as the referee reacts slowly to the situation. A brutal knockout and then some excellent sportsmanship - this guy is my new favorite fighter!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Tommy McCork!
Tommy McCork spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
