Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Venegas (ranked 729 p4p, 2438 weight class) and Smif Thibodeaux (ranked 87 p4p, 260 weight class). Smif Thibodeaux will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Frankie Venegas !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Smif Thibodeaux!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Peter Branson and Dirk Anderson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Venegas shoots and misses
and Thibodeaux counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
It looks like Frankie Venegas has been cut.
Venegas shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Thibodeaux napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Venegas connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Thibodeaux some visible discomfort.
Venegas tries to score with some ground and pound. Thibodeaux controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

We've been hearing good reports from Venegas 's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Venegas is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Thibodeaux is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Venegas has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Venegas working the ground and pound but Thibodeaux is defending the strikes.
Thibodeaux looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Thibodeaux wants to control but Venegas postures up.
Venegas is working to tighten his grip on Thibodeaux's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Thibodeaux has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Venegas is really squeezing tight and eventually Thibodeaux passes out! Venegas breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
