PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Harley Bird (ranked 24797 p4p, 24915 weight class) and Malik Hooker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Harley Bird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Malik Hooker!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Sam Margolis and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hooker scores with a takedown into Bird's guard.

Bird is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hooker is aware though and is defending well.

Bird is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Hooker drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hooker jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Bird is looking for a triangle but Hooker pushes his legs off easily.
Hooker cracks Bird with a solid left hand.

Bird looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Hooker passes into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The referee asks Hooker politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Hooker prefers to stall for the moment though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Bird's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hooker landing strikes.
Bird is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like Hooker might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hooker works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Hooker controlling the position.
Hooker scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Bird to see if he's OK.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Hooker working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Bird is letting Hooker control him for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hooker is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bird has escaped the position, nice work there.
Hooker is staying tight to Bird's torso, preventing him from escaping.

The referee asks Hooker politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Hooker prefers to stall for the moment though.
Bird wants to control but Hooker postures up.
Bird tries to bench press Hooker off him but Hooker keeps the position.
Hooker in side control lands a decent elbow.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Bird gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Hooker keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Malik Hooker dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Bird shoots in and drives through. Hooker sprawls well.
Hooker steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Bird.
Bird lands a head kick. Hooker smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

It looks like Malik Hooker has been cut.

Hooker has managed to clinch.
Bird lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Bird wants to break the clinch but can't.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Hooker has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Hooker.
Hooker digs a right hand into Bird's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Bird's gas tank.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bird is trying to force a seperation but Hooker has the dominant position.
Hooker keeps control of Bird as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Hooker lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Bird is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Hooker pulls his head out easily.

Still in half guard, Hooker seems content to control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hooker is continuing to stall.

Hooker is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Bird has managed to free his arm - good work.
Malik Hooker has got the better of the ground game so far.

Hooker is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hooker slows the pace down in half guard.
Bird has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
The adventures of Hooker the control monster continue. Boring.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Bird misses with a takedown attempt

and Hooker counters by clinching up.
Hooker doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Hooker turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Hooker wants to control but Bird is keeping him busy.
Bird wants to control but Hooker postures up.

Bird tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hooker wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Hooker really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bird. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The referee asks Hooker politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Hooker prefers to stall for the moment though.

Hooker is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Bird knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Hooker cracks Bird with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hooker is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Malik Hooker showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Hooker is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Bird defends it well.
Hooker content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Hooker looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hooker is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Hooker content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Bird has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hooker is working away from the top position though.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Bird throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Hooker moves into the clinch.

Hooker missing with knees to the body.
Bird can't find room to land a body shot as Hooker controls the action.
Hooker goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Hooker.
A body shot lands from Hooker.
Bird scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Bird is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Bird.
Hooker doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Hooker tries to throw a body punch but Bird avoids it by throwing Hooker back against the cage.
Hooker slowing the pace effectively.
Bird is trying to break free.
Hooker just leaning against Bird, taking a breather.
Hooker prevents a body shot from Bird.
Bird misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Bird is fighting off a takedown attempt but Hooker is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Bird to the mat. Bird regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Hooker keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Bird's head.

And that's the end of the fight!
Malik Hooker comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Hooker winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
