PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jamil Hurst (ranked 553 p4p, 655 weight class) and Abdo Farah (ranked 82 p4p, 103 weight class). Hurst comes to the cage accompanied by Keep Their Heads Ringin'. Abdo Farah told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jamil Hurst! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Abdo Farah! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Joseph Jones and Dean Styles.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hurst closes the distance and clinches up with Farah, looking for a takedown. Hurst pushes Farah against the cage but Farah circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Farah throws out a counter right but Hurst avoids it with no problem. Hurst misses with a looping left. Farah has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Hurst misses with a hook. A nice side step and Farah releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home. Hurst shoots for a takedown but Farah saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Hurst looks to score with a jab to the body but Farah is just out of range. Farah throws a jab when Hurst was well out of range. A looping hook to the body misses from Farah. Hurst does a little dance to reset his feet. Farah throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Hurst makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Farah takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Hurst looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Farah is fending him off so far but Hurst persists. Nope, Farah circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jamil Hurst. That's going to take a lot out of him. Nice body punch from Hurst. Jamil Hurst seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hurst has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Farah. Hurst lands with a cross.
It looks like Abdo Farah has been cut. Good standup being displayed there by Hurst as he connects with a hook. Farah's jab looks to have found its range, popping Hurst under the eye. Hurst lands with a shot to the body. Hurst swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Farah throws a body kick but he wasn't in range. Hurst appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Farah misses with an attempted mid kick.
Hurst half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Hurst walks into a straight right hand from Farah. Farah avoids the body shot from Hurst.
Farah pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Hurst drops down looking for a counter takedown but Farah sprawls and moves away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hurst misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Farah.

and Farah counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Farah swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Hurst. Farah throws a poor cross that misses
and Hurst counters with a shoot takedown. Farah fights it but they end up in guard. Hurst trying to control but Farah is working from the bottom. Farah preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Hurst throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Farah works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Farah wants to sweep but no luck. Farah looking to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hurst drops back looking for a leg! Farah is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Farah manages to kick Hurst off! Hurst jumps back into Farah's guard. Farah tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hurst controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Hurst ducks under a wild hook from Farah. Hurst changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Hurst throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Hurst tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Farah was well out of range. Poor timing from Hurst. Farah throws out a counter right but Hurst avoids it with no problem. Hurst jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hurst misses the jab. Hurst moves out of range of the body kick from Farah.
Hurst throws a jab but it's blocked by Farah. Farah drops his hands momentarily and Hurst takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Hurst goes for a double leg but Farah avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Farah continues to drive forward. It seemed like Farah was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Farah digs a right hand into Hurst's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Hurst's gas tank. Farah misses with a shot to the kidneys.
A short body shot lands from Farah as the two fighters clinch.
Hurst blocks an uppercut.
Hurst pushes Farah back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head. Farah swings wildly with an uppercut but Hurst uses good head movement to avoid it. Hurst prevents a body shot from Farah. Hurst blocks an uppercut.
Hurst can't break the clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Jamil Hurst will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Abdo Farah's cut. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Hurst gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily enabling Farah to counter with a crisp jab. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hurst is defended easily by Farah. And Farah responds with a good body kick, but Hurst manages to step out the way in time. Hurst thuds his right hand into Farah's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Farah tries to land a front kick but Hurst steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Farah misses the shot to the body. Farah misses with an uppercut. Hurst saw that one coming. Hurst changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hurst throws a lazy right hand but Farah sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Farah takes one on the button. Farah throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Farah throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Hurst fails with a takedown attempt. Farah only half commits to the counter leg kick. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jamil Hurst. That's going to take a lot out of him. Hurst lands a body shot.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hurst misses the jab. Farah takes a swing at Hurst's ribcage but misses. Hurst drops his hands momentarily and Farah takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Farah lands a really nice looking cross but Hurst seems unphased.
Hurst slips under a jab. A jab from Hurst misses. Farah misses with a wild body shot. Jab by Hurst. This has been an exciting period of action! Farah throws a leg kick that misses. Hurst feinted with a counter takedown. Hurst lands a right hook to the body.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Farah looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Hurst scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Jab from Farah. Farah bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Hurst scores with a takedown into Farah's guard. Farah wants to control the position but Hurst says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Hurst working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Hurst misses with a head shot. Farah uses the momentum to regain guard. Farah working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hurst.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hurst wants to control from the top but Farah keeps moving. Hurst keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Farah's head. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Farah seems keen to control Hurst's posture. Farah wants to get back to his feet but Hurst is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Hurst sitting in guard here, content to control. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

It looks like Jamil Hurst has been cut. Hurst punishes Farah's body with a nice straight punch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Farah missing with a left hand there. Hurst was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Farah cracks Hurst with a right hand to the side of the head.
Hurst is rocked! Farah connects with a picture perfect right hand that knocks Hurst out cold! This one is over in a flash!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Abdo Farah! A very excited looking Abdo Farah rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
