PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ishmael Egyptian (ranked 1117 p4p, 1955 weight class) and Pedro Gomez (ranked 126 p4p, 205 weight class). Gomez has chosen Reaper as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ishmael Egyptian!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pedro Gomez!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Steve Smith and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Egyptian takes one to the side of the head.
Egyptian dives in for a single leg takedown but Gomez sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Gomez swings away with an uppercut that misses.
The referee calls for Gomez to work.
Gomez lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Egyptian.
Egyptian gets control of Gomez's arms and successfully pulls guard. Egyptian will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Gomez lands a nice hook to Egyptian's body. Egyptian takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Egyptian has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Egyptian is nestled in close to Gomez, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Egyptian is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gomez sees it coming and defends easily.
Egyptian is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Egyptian looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Egyptian is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Gomez decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Pedro Gomez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Gomez throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Egyptian on the side of the head.

and Gomez counters with a body kick that stops Egyptian in his tracks momentarily.

Gomez explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Gomez's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Egyptian connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Gomez scrambles back to his feet.
Gomez walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gomez sends Egyptian crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Gomez is motioning to the referee to let Egyptian up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Gomez finds Egyptian's off switch, with a big overhand right that connects perfectly to the side of the head! Egyptian flops back against the cage, eyes gazing into the distance. Gomez lands an unnecessary shot before the referee has time to step in and end the fight. Brutal stuff but I'm sure Egyptian will be OK.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:42 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Pedro Gomez!
After winning the bout, Pedro Gomez thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
