PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Armad Bates (ranked 769 p4p, 1070 weight class) and Ryan Yoder (ranked 105 p4p, 153 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Armad Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ryan Yoder!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Edson Gomes and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bates shoots in for a takedown but Yoder shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
It seemed like Yoder was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Horrible takedown attempt by Bates or perhaps it was just good defense by Yoder, which made it look bad.

Bates darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Yoder is looking to escape.
Yoder keeping control of the position.
Yoder wants to control but Bates is keeping busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yoder pushes Bates off looking to stand but Bates dives back in and keeps control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bates seems to be working for a kimura but Yoder defends the submission attempt.

Bates has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Yoder kicks Bates off and gets back to his feet.
Bates is trying hard to land a takedown here. Yoder sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Bates thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Yoder tries to buck Bates off but Bates is having none of it.

Yoder is trying to control Bates's posture but Bates avoids it.
Yoder wants to get back to his feet.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Bates is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Yoder has escaped the position, nice work there.
Bates tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Yoder is looking to reverse the position.
Yoder told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Bates working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Yoder prevents Bates from moving into mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Yoder gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Bates drops back looking for a leg! Yoder is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Yoder manages to kick Bates off! Bates jumps back into Yoder's guard.
Yoder trying to keep a closed guard but Bates is proving a slippery customer.

Bates is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Yoder can do to turn this around?
Yoder looking to hit a scissor sweep but Bates is one step ahead there.
Bates passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Yoder wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Bates is looking to take a break and control but Yoder is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Yoder pushes Bates away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Bates gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
